the electric window on the driver's side W124 has just started playing up: it still winds up and down OK, but about 2mm from the top when closing, the mechanism starts to make a heavy clicking sound ... and the window won't close completely - leaves about a 1mm gap at top of doorframe. is this a known issue? what part to replace?? thanks for any tips guys!

You need a new regulator quadrant, the teeth have stripped. If you're lucky the gear on the motor might be OK.
There was a post some time ago of a repair being made to the quadrant teeth by building up with weld and filing to contour again, but the stuff its made of isn't 'clean' metal so don't know how easy this would be. Try a search.
Another alternative is a breaker's part around £15 - £20 + p/p.

I thought I was dreaming - exactly the same problem with my W124 Coupe.
Flagstaff, any luck sourcing a regulator quadrent yet or does anyone know a breaker who might have them?.
Has anyone had any experiance of fitting a regulator quadrent?

Cheers, Woodsie.

Woodsie, the window regulator on your Coupe is a little trickier than the saloon/estate to do. Your regulator isn't held in by nuts & bolts like the latter, but by large rivets which have to be drilled out, and obviously an appropriately large rivet gun is required to replace them. You also need to remove your window glass from the door completely. I'd strongly advise a Haynes manual for instructions, as the diagrams and photos are very helpful (In fact I'd say almost essential!).
As for sourcing the parts, usually readily available from breakers such as 'Mercman' or 'Mercland', but they may prefer to supply complete with motor.
Good luck.

Our W124 Coupe has the exact same problem with the driver's door window. Called Mercman and a few other breakers last week searching for a regulator but nobody seems to have one for the Coupe. Nearest Mercedes dealer is quoting £87+VAT which is about £100.

Hadn't known about the rivet situation however. Thought this would be a relatively simple repair, but I've no experience with rivetting.

Job done by local garage.
Regulator quadrent supplied by Dronsfield Mercedes for £50 and garage charged £40 for fitting.
