HIya.

My 200T has developed an odd problem - we got some switches out of a car at the scrappy and replaced one of the worn ones in my second-hand merc's console.

whilst swapping the switches, we noticed that the rear right swich
has its innards missinbg and a previous owner had put some insulating tape around the bare-ended wires, but this was in the process of falling apart so we didn't know whether any of them were meant to be shorted together...

i asked my partner to tape the end of the wires, but the ignition was still on and there was a spark when two of the wires touched accidentally. she finished her taping and we swapped the duff front left switch.

now we have two working front windows, but only when a door is ajar! all the fuses are okay. we're unsure if we have frelled one of the relays (and if so, which one?) or if we should have left two fo the wires for the back-right window shorted (and if so which two?!)

any clues anybody?

Easy - broken wires as they pass through the door

Just make up a new loom for all the wires & join it in the door and in the car, removing the section in the rubber boot. That'll cure the problem

surely this doesn't explain it suddenly not working since we messed with the console and also working when the door is open (i.e. when the door switch is in the open position allowing you to close the windows without the ignition being active)?

and the fact that both front doors failed simultaneously

disconnect the wiring from one of the switches and see how the windows operate, if no difference, do the same for the other switch

use a process of elimination

cheers

Wierd windows

OK, just re-read the whole thread

If both the windows work when the doors are open then they're working on the circuit that allows windows to be used with ignition off and doors open. This is a feature of later cars only, I think

If, the above being true, the windows don't work when the doors are closed then the "normal" circuit is kaput. Get a circuit diagram (anyone? The Haynes manual is awful here) and work out what's failed

Sparks when wires touch imply something's shorted to earth and fuses and/or relays may have been blown

If individual windows work normally but only when the door is at a specific position then that's broken cables

Final thing: door switches are different to console switches and they can't be interchanged. I can't remember the exact details here but check the number of pins on the switch!

the passenger window no longer works with the doors open, just the driver's.

tracking down the relay is proving hard, & I don't know how to test them.
all the fuses are good, although someone mentioned a second fuse box?

this model doesn't have the door switches up front, only console ones - it took them out of another console personally and know they are the right ones.

still stuck!

If you have a multi meter I will tell you how to test relay's.

Windows that work without ignition on but when a door is open is a feature on my ML which has a main fusebox under the bonnet but also has an auxilary fusebox on the passenger side 'kick-panel' (close to where the passenger's feet would be)

I would definately be looking for another fuse box on your vehicle as i suspect a fuse blown...I very much doubt that you could have damaged a relay as they are always fuse-protected.....

As an aside...if you do suspect a faulty relay (after ruling out a fuse problem) you can usually try 'swapping' with one of the other relays in the fusebox as they are often the same ... just check the numbers on the casing to ensure they match first.

Another place to look is in the boot, side panels?....or if the battery is in the boot have a look alongside it.

there is nothing in the boot side panels (it's an estate) and the battery lives up front

In that case it must be somewhere under the bonnet....have a look in the area close to the bulkhead .....look also near and around the main fusebox...sometimes it can be difficult to recognise.........

well, there's the box behind the fusebox, but I'm sure when i went in there it only had relays...
