Probably stupid question, so apologies, but...

The electric windows on my 1988 300TE work without the key being in the ignition, let alone before I've turned it. Is this supposed to happen? I've only recently bought the car and its my first MB, and I've certainly never driven a car where e/w work like this.

Also, battery is down to 1 bar and am wondering whether the two might be related, i.e. battery is being drained by e/w always being "on".

Your wise advice greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

the windows are set up to work without the key in the ignition as long as one of the two front doors is open. if yours operate in this way but with the doors closed, it might be an idea to check the switches on the door recesses - a fault here would lead the circuit to thinking the doors were always open.

overuse of the windows without additional power being fed to the battery (from the running alternator) might cause the battery to run down: but in my opinion this isn't too likely - it's not like you'd sit there opening and shutting the windows with the motor off, til he battery weakened ... is it?

Junior might though! Remember that Harry Enfield sketch, playing the stroppy son, who cleans the dads car windows by holding the wet spong against the opening and closing window?!

Mike.

well, how stoopid am I ...

got home and checked, and yes, windows work when front doors open, but not when they are closed, evidently as they are supposed to (but I didn't know that!)

And yes, it was my 9 year old son who was playing with the buttons that alarmed me.

Flagstaff, what can I say? There but for the grace of God ... hope you can get it sorted.

Many thanks for your help.

Sorry, Cretin105, "There but for the grace of God" meant for you. Seriously, wish I could help. Since I can obviously barely work a message board, let alone electric windows, no hope for me when things really start to go wrong!
