Firstly, nice to meet such a nice bunch of people on a helpful site!
I have a 1989 W124 E230 which I love, but it's prone to getting dangerously hot. The irrepressible Haynes manual has a heading in relevant section of "testing, removal, refitting" of the Electro-mechanical fan, however the "testing" bit is entirely omitted. My fan doesn't kick in ever....I've checked the fan over and can't find a problem. I suspect that it's the switch but it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Haynes book.
Has anyone had similar experience or can they tell me where this mystery temp sensor/switch is?
Any help much appreciated.

Hello Brian,

Firstly, I also love my E300 (1992), very lovely car to drive :D

I pressume your engine is a four cylinder engine, the the temperature switch for the fan clutch is located on top of the cylinder, at the right hand side of the engine (view from the front of the car) the one with two straight pin, and will switch on at 100 deegree C. After it kick in, and if u step on the throttle, it will sound like a aeroplane!!!!

Beside the electrial connector was located at the right hand side of the fan clutch (also, view from the front of the car), which behind it.

I hope this could help u, to solve it out, as mind is a E300, my fan was a mechanical viscous couple, not electrical, but I find out from one of the workshop manual...... :D

i would agree that the cooling fan switch is the most likely suspect

this is cheap and easy to replace, pick one up from either eurocarparts or german and swedish for about a tenner.

if you do not replace it ,you could have a big bill on your hands with a blown head gasket!
