Hi,

My friend has a 1997 T plate Mercedes C180 Classic. He has recently changed the battery, and now the car appears to be running in what I would call a safe mode.

I don't know anything about mercs, I'm a jag man, but it's very similar to the "limp home" mode on Jags, where it applies default settings to everything to get you home, albeit roughly.

The car will start and run fine, but has no pull at all really, compared to what it had, and at above 4,000rpm, it will start to misfire. It's also using more fuel than it did.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,

Matt

It could be the MAF filter if fitted, unplugging it would show if it was that. If
the car runs better without it,then it is normally faulty.

There are many things that can cause this, but do as Malcolm says and dis connect the MAF sensor - then see how the engine responds and we can go from your reply to that simple test.
