We are about to drive from Melbourne to Sydney (900km) with a slight trans leak from the rear of our trans on our 98 E240. Its leaking from a cable that exits the trans and heads up towards the shifter mechanism. If I remove the boot from around the cable, the leak turns nasty. My question is can I use cheap standard trans fluid as an emergency solution without damaging the trans?
Regards Adam.

A trans leak on the cable can become nasty if not fixed quickly. The fluid can use the cable insulation as a pipe and flow up into the ECU, leaving you with a big repair bill for a new ECU, any trans damage due to low fluid, plus the original seal failure. I wouldn't drive it at all but get it fixed immediatley. It will be a lot,lot cheaper that way. Not something to ignore and live with.
