Hi
Bought SLK 230k W reg about a month ago no sign of emulsification in oil.
recently I have found slight light brown sludge on the very end of the dip stick

There is no sign of oil in the water
and no emulsification on the filler cap

Does it mean I may have a head gasket problem?

I only do very short jouneys could this be a reason (not getting warmed up enough)
Could it just be moisture down the dip stick itself?
or maybe with emmisions being recirculated?

Thanks

Tony

Hello Tony,,that engine does not have any real head problems.

Do make sure that all of the breathing is clean, and clear, lots of short journeys do not help as you say

could also check for moisture in all intake areas (air filter would be an easy place to start but to totaly rule out the head problems, it could be worth doing a compresion test, whip out the plugs take readings , the cross check them with informationin a haynes or elsewhere,

if the readings are spot on or atleast v close then there is no chance of a head gasket problem

good luck getting to the bottom of it ;)

Just one other thing if it was the head gasket would I notice any loss of water?
The level has not moved in about a month

Not necessarily a water loss, if there's no sign of oil film on the coolant surface, i'd be very surprised if you had a head gasket problem, it only needs the slightest drop of oil residue to create the oil stain on the water.

As said, have a good blow through of all breather pipes etc.

Is the vehicle due for oil change?

First thing i'd do is take it for a proper run. May just be due to condenstation that's not evaporating due to the short journeys- my 356 speedster replica gets a little mayonaise build up from time to time in winter despite it being aircooled!

Just a thought, seen this on long truck dipstick tubes.&always on the end, as the stick goes round the bends....might have been sludge in the dipstick tube, scraped off by removing the dipstick?
