Great idea about just changing the oil every year, hadn't thought of that. Tend to think of ATF change as something really unusual which is daft as in the us it's as common as an engine oil change.

Thanks for that Wighty, I've bought a lot of stuff from them but the postage to France for just that is prohibitive (read not allowed by She who ...) So I'll wait until a more important purchase is needed with file at the ready.
We're coming to France at Easter.... travelling Caen to Jonzac if it's any use?

I could have bought another Eclass, 100'000 Miles, full service history, one owner, 1 years guarantee, €3000 cheaper, plus I know the garage owner. The car itself was pristine condition, owned by the MD of a local company. This would of course have been the safer bet.BUT it was 2008 model, w211. And I was tempted, but I took a chance and bought the w212 with limited history etc. but its the newer model, has good specs, and I really like the car. Did I do the right thing? Only time will tell.... All 2nd hand cars carry a risk, even the guaranteed ones, none the less, the brand is good, and that has to count for something. Your comment about the transmission oil and burnt smell etc...has me bothered, so in the morning, I plan on sticking a narrow plastic tube down the dipstick pipe, and pumping a small qty of oil out..just 50 ml's will do, and give it the "Nose" and "Sight" test.. :)
Thanks again for your help, Oldspanners..
Best Regards, Jim2
Jim, just the tube will do and the oil on it will be enough to tell you, the smell would be that strong.

Thanks very much indeed, most kind. I'll keep that in mind if a purchase is needed before then. I'm not that far from Caen (100kms), near Bagnoles de L'Orne should you need any help.

Cheers. We won't have a lot of room at Easter (more damned furniture) but small items would be no trouble.

Anyone have any experience using the Febi Bilstein F36332 as replacement plug ( electrical socket connector) while doing an oil change on the auto transmission on the w212?
Regards, Jim2

Hi Oldspanners,
managed to siphon small qty of transmission fluid out of the oil pan, and the colour is basically black tinged with red around the edges... but no burnt smell, so as soon as the kit arrives, I will do an oil change. As it had 124'000 Miles on it when I bought it, and the red tab is missing from the dipstick pipe, I think that it had at least one oil change in it's life ( at least I hope so !!! :) )
Regards, Jim2.

Good looks like you got it in time as the smell is pronounced.
Happy motoring.
Edit Just remembered if you are changing the pilot bushing (electrical connector) I found it very tight to fit even after oiling the O rings and needed a very strong but careful push before the bolt in the bottom would engage. Changing just the O rings works anyway.

Hi again Oldspanners,
when changing the pilot bushing, that's good advice and I will bear that in mind. But if the area around it are completely dry, I may leave it, based on the principle of not fixing it if it's not broken. Whereabouts are you getting the "O" rings? That would be a simpler and cheaper solution.
For the change what I'm thinking of using is:-
Febi Bilstein 30018 Automatic Transmission Fluid @ £31.50 for 5 Ltrs
Febi Bilstein 10098 Transmission Oil Filter Set ( Gasked+Filter) @ £14.15
Febi Bilstein F36332 Gearbox Adapter Plug ( Pilot Bushing) @ £8.99
This Febi Transmission Fluid is rated MB 236.14, and as far as I can make out from the forum, it's backwards compatible, have you any ideas about that? Problem is I don't know what kind of oil is in the box...so ideally, I should do a complete drain, but I am reluctant to do that, given my present Mercedes experience. Would be safer to drop the sump, replace the filter and gasket, and replace the present oil with new....I can always replace the oil in 4 ltr batches as time goes on, until I have maybe 12 fresh litres put in, by that time, I think that the oil purity will be in the 90's % range.
Another oil possibility is Fuchs Titan ATF 4134,meets MB 236.14.
If you or anyone else on the Forum have any idea's or suggestions, advice etc. about the above, feel free to comment.
All comments are welcome.
Thanks and Regards,
Jim2

Yes Jim I doubt very much your car would have got to that mileage without the O rings being changed and from memory the original ones were white and the new ones black. I haven't been able to find them separately now and buying the bushing seems the only way unless you have a box of them.
That's the oil that I used but a complete change although a bit more trouble would be worth the effort for another few litres of oil as any debris floating around won't do your gear box any good. Anyway you will see what's in the sump and on the magnet when you change the filter.
Oh and don't forget a copper sump plug washer.
Edit Memory is really going and a dipstick.

Well and good if I could have got the new seals, but it's no big deal. The pilot bushing is not so expensive anyway. I would be happier to completely drain the box, TC and Rad, for sure. Only doubts I have on that score is that I have never drained an automatic gearbox before...but, lots of help here on the forum on that job, se we will see how it goes.
I even have the part Nr for the washer 007603-010100. Is this washer the compressed type? Or just a plain flat copper washer?Surprisingly, not too many for sale on the internet ( that I could find anyhow) but will get one from the local Mercedes dealership. So you use the Febi-Bilstein oil etc.? or the Fuchs?.
Thanks for your help,
Regards Jim2.

Yep, 236.14 is backwards compatible and mixing isn't a problem , if it were me though I would still do another 4L added later (after draining ) unless of course you do the TC drain thingy . I've only used the Fuchs ATF so can't speak for the Febi oil .

Thanks LostKiwi,
Yes its cheaper than the one Yugguy posted, but I think that the difference in price is because in Yugguy's one, it contains the 6 pan bolts. Not that it would bother me too much to use the old bolts.........in any case, that offer is now closed o_O. But Thanks again anyway,
Regards, Jim2

Probably cheaper still to buy the filter and gasket as a kit from someone like MB Grangemouth (with the forum discount ) and the Fuchs ATF from eBay .

You can buy a seperate MB filter and gasket for £23.49 delivered on eBay (genuine MB) . Then get the Fuchs seperately , it's a lot cheaper than the MB stuff but regularly used
