I'm considering the purchase of a W124 estate and would like to know the pros and cons of the various 4 cylinder engines which were available. The 220 looks best on paper- 150 BHP, but perhaps there's more to it than that. Which is the most refined and easiest to work on. Are the 16 valve units better than the 12 valve, which gives the best MPG with an auto 'box? Any advice gratefully received.

John.

I will add my 2 peneth andf wait to be shot down in flames.

As you will see from my signature i currently run a 300TE, it's the 12 valve (103) engine, which i have found a piece of cake to work on. I think Andy will back me up here, the 24v seem to suffer a litttle with valve problems, largely due to the valves being on the small side.

I get 23/25 mpg out of mine, which i can live with. I have to say that i'm not a lover of big cars, with small engines, which is where i would place a W124, 200,220,230.

Hope this is of use.
