Hello to u all having just joined the forum I wonder wether anyone has had the same problem as I have.I own a c class220 deisel2005 year with 80000 on the clock. My car went into limphome mode and the computer flashed up engine oil level too high. I went to a reputable garage who disaboed limp home mode, put a additive in the tank and told me to take it on a long run on the motorway wich I duly did. After about10miles something went bang followed by loads of smoke and it hasn't worked since.isuspect catastrophic engine damage.iwas wondering if anyone knows if the engine could be repaired or knows any good garages that could put me a decent second hand one in at reasonable cost.many thanks for reading the thread tom

It sounds to me like the dpf has killed the engine. Do you have a dpf fitted??????

My bad, I thought euro5 came in a few years later. The only daft question is the one not asked :)

After about10miles something went bang followed by loads of smoke and it hasn't worked since.isuspect catastrophic engine damage.

Presumably it revved itself to bits on it's own fumes?
Scary when that happens on diesels.

The scenario starts with over frequent DPF regeneration, causing dilution of and raised level of the engine oil.
This means far more mass of hydrocarbon coming through the engine breather, which the engine can run on happily - if it revs too high it can break all the whizzy bits.

The reason for all this is usually just a DPF near the end of its life, or one suffering oil contamination from eg failing turbo - note that we do see turbo failures as a result of the oil dilution as well, so a bit of a vicious circle.

Thanks everyone for your replys the car does have a dpf fitted and the info I have gathered up to now points to the dpf failing causing diesel fuel entering the sump (2and half litres )and contaminating the oil.The quote I've had off mercedes is £10500 for a new engine dpf and catalyst.I desperately need info on any good independent mb garages in the north west whobcan supply and fit a good used engine.any suggestions guys

CREW engines specialise in Mercedes engines - google them.

I would also be questioning the actions of the garage that dealt with your limp mode situation, and sent you on your way oblivious to the potential catastrophe about to happen.

Were they a Mercedes specialist ?

If not, have you learnt anything there ?

The garage wich turned limp home mode off and put additive in the tank is a national well known garage and are subject to legal proceeding . When I spoke to MB they said they would never put additive in the tank wich at the time only had about £10 worth of diesel in it.Regarding turning limp mode off its the equivalent of overloading a plug socket with the fuse bypassed.I think the lesson to be learned is only deal with mercedes trained technicians
