I purchased a E240 avantgarde (W plate ) six weeks ago. Last week the engine diagnostic indicator lamp came on. So i took it back to the garage as it is under the six months warrenty given with the car when i bought it . They replaced the ht leads, as you have guessed the diagnostic lamp came on again yesterday. Has anybody got any idea what it could be , so i can go back to the garage and say this is the problem fix it. Otherwise i can see this dragging out until my warrenty expires , and then its going to get expensive. Any advice welcome, dolmanp.

Hi

Had this problem with my CLK, first they replaced the Lambda sensor in the exhaust system, light was out for about 1000 miles, then came on again, they have now replaced a sensor called the 'Hot film' ?? sensor in the air box or somesuch. Light is presently out. I was advised not to drive with the engine light on as motor was running very rich, this they said could destroy the cat!! First job cost about £220, not got the bill for the second job yet! This at an independent. Took a long time for them to diagnose the problem the second time around.

The most common fault on all petrol mercs is the Air Mass Sensor (AKA MAF sensor or hot film). - I doubt that HT leads would show as an engine management warning, though leads on the V6 are very expensive so it's odd that they opted for this. - interestingly my 2000 E doesn't have a warning light.
Anyway
The only way to tell is to have a proper diagnostic done with an MB computer (starttac) to interrogate the cars memory as to why it tripped a fault. This generally costs around £75. I assume its an independent garage, if so, they are never going to get to the bottom of it without the proper kit. Give them one more chance then insist it goes to an MB specialist.
AMS are around £250
o2 sensors (Lamda) are £120
Throttle bodies £400
Engine management computers £900
etc
so it pays to be persistent whilst the warranty stands.

Thanks Scratchit and Jberks

Thank you both for the advice. The car is back at the independent garage now, and being armed with the proper information feels enpowering. Also told them if they cant sort this out this time its going to go to my local MB dealership , which will cost them a lot. Will keep you informed as to the outcome, as they are going to ring me later, Thanks, dolmanp

UPDATE The garage rung , to tell me when they changed the HT leads they didnt change them all, my confidence in this garage has waned . They said they didnt change them all because i would have cost £220. But now they are going to change them all ,(although i informed them with the help of my new friends at MBOAF that it was the MAF sensor ). I should be getting my 2000 E240 back on friday. So when the engine diagnostic light comes on again , i will take it to my local MB dealership and this independent garage can pay the bill, when will these people ever listen to a well informed mercedes owner. Thanks for all your help bit i feel i will be using this forum more often. dolmanp

It may not be the Maf, but it is one of the items it could be. The platinum wire sensor heats up each time you turn off your engine. This is so it can burn off any contaminants.

It could be any of the other items mentioned by JB. I have heard of MAFs going without the warning light coming on. This usually causes the engine to run on a too rich mixture.

An emmisions test from the exhaust would (I imagine) would pick up this fault.

reply to colechelle

The first time the light came on there was no loss of power. But the second time it happened there was a slight loss of power and a slight juddering , like the engine was starved of fuel. As soon as i took my foot off the gas it was fine.Hope this helps , dolmanp

Hi guys,

My 2000 E240 has the check engine light permanently showing.
The local MB dealership claim that my O2 sensors are faulty and need to be replaced.
However, an independent garage checked my plugs and claim that the wrong kind of plugs are installed in my engine and that I should change the plugs and put the right kind.
Which of the 2 options should I go with?
Definately the changing of plugs is cheaper but if that's not the problem, then I still have to change the O2 sensors...which is very expensive in Uganda.
I urgently need someone to give me advice please.

What plugs are in there?
I can't see how 'the wrong plugs' could be so bad as to cause the O2 sensors to show faulty. They either fire or they don't.
Either get a 3rd opinion or else suggest that if they're that certain, they should guarantee the work so you don't pay if the light stays on!
Actually, if they are saying that the plugs are causing too high an O2 reading then this would show on an exhaust analysis. Then if the reading on the meter matches what the sensors are reading you know the sensors are ok. If the O2 is fine then suspect the sensors.

help?

Hi I know this thread is old but if ppl would just refresh their memories but I am a woman (u can prob tell) and the engine diagnostic indicator lamp is on when im driving and the power has slightly gone when I am driving on the motorway. There is also a sign saying I need to go and get a service B which I am in the process of doing. My question is in the meantime (about a week) is it ok to drive the car about 50 k a day or will this ruin the engine? I am a bit concerned..

man ythanks for your time
