The engine diagnostic amber light came on in my 07 plate Mercedes C220 CDI Estate today.

I took it to the car service place I have used for the last 20 years and their diagnostic (Crypton) equipment stated that Injector No. 1 was short, meaning as I understand it that the injector timing (length of on pulse) was too short. They cleared the code and said to keep an eye on it. The car is running normally and nothing seems amiss.

Can any of the more knowledgeable members of the forum, tell me if I have a more serious impending problem looming? Would it help to get the injectors cleaned/serviced.

The car only has 61,000 miles on the clock, I have had it 2 months and put 2,500 trouble free miles on the clock, so I'm extremely puzzled with the apparent problem.

I should say the light came back on again on the drive home from work tonight.

Yours in anticipation of a helpful answer.

I think a test on STAR could be more beneficial for a fault code, some code readers do not always pick up all MB faults

Doesnt sound like any fault I have ever come across. If you had a failing injector you would also have a range of poor starting problems and or a misfire to go with it.

It is likely like Malc said their diagnostic equipment is not capable of reading the MB fault codes clearly giving you and them wrong information. With STAR you can check the performance of injectors and a range of other things to give you an accurate diagnosis.

When to the local Independent MB specialist today, who put it on STAR and same information came up, Injector No: 1 timing pulse outside limits (too short a duration), he cleared code and advised injector was probably on way out and needed replacing.

Car is running fine, engine diagnostic light stayed off until I restarted the car, later in the day.

Question, I have to get to Birmingham for an all day meeting on Saturday from very early to late, would I be risking damage to the car driving it.

Should the injector be replaced or cleaned? I seem to be getting conflicting information, from various sources.

If the quantity correction value is too high, which is what I think you mean, then you can either send the injector to be rebuilt or replace with a new one, either or, that is the fix you will need. As for driving it, no one can say it will be ok or not ok for sure, its a chance you will have to take for yourself.

Engine Diagnostic Light went out all by itself today, so I really puzzled by this! The car has a warranty from the dealership i got it from (not a M-B garage), but now no fault showing!

It's a 2007 Estate so W203 646 engine with Bosch injectors.

I have a friend with a newer M-B with the peizo injectors, he is not impressed has had lots of problems with the car going back to the dealership, it seems to be a commonn fault reading the internet.

Not sure what injector cleaners would do in-situ, can understand cleaning and calibrating them off car.

I'll wait and see if problem re-appears (probably 5 minutes after warranty expires!).

I have trip to Brum and back tomorrow so a go long run.

Now been over a week and 600 miles and engine management light has not come back on (touch wood!). Car is running very well, although mpg is not high, but that's probably my heavy right foot.
