engine noise,please help

hiya guysngirls.my 190 1.8 has developed a top end ticking noise.quite loud too.the noise comes and goes every couple of minutes.there is also a loss of power when the noise cuts in.the motors just had an interim service.im thinking valves maybe.shes done 84000 miles.any thoughts on this.?

almost undoubtedly its the hydraulic tappets that is giving you the noise. It cuts in, you hear it for maybe a minute and then it just goes, only to cut in again a later stage. The "clicking" speeds up as you rev the engine.... if this is the case then it may well be the tappets.

I gather its not that expensive a job to get done but I don't know how many people ever bother getting the job done as it doesn't seem to cause any harm

not valves but tappets. the tappets on your car are hydraulic, and therefore self-adjusting for wear. but the self adjustment is limited, and in the end must be supplemented by fitting thicker spacers/shims between the tappet and the head of the valve stem ... or by simply renewing all the tappets as a set. not a difficult job, and well within the scope of the home mechanic. interesting you should mention that the noise appeared after a service: cheap and nasty oil can also cause the symptoms you mention, when the tappets and or shims and or cam are worn.
