Petrol 230E Auto, 1985, done 160K miles. Engine is running well, good fuel consumption and performance, no leaks, but troubled by ?growling? sound when drive is engaged after engine started from cold. Noise is only detectable at low speeds. When engine is warm it is only slightly apparent when engine is ticking-over. It just sounds like something is ?loose?, perhaps. Tickover in neutral is also a bit ?lumpy? .
(I have had tappet noise, and successfully cured that by cleaning the valve followers. This is different)
Could it be the chain, or timing tensioner? I?ve never heard the noise of an engine when the chain or tensioner are on their way out. Can anyone advise ?
NB. The cylinder head gasket was successfully replaced some 6K miles ago, but the single timing chain was not replaced , so is probably the one from new.
