Just upgrade the manufacturer oil spec to a higher one.

What spec / oil are you currently using ?

I agree with this sentiment.. but I'm currently in two minds (hopefully this isn't a pure thread hijack and is somewhat linked to OPs circumstance)..

Anyway, my car is just about to hit 200k and burns a lot of oil and at least the valve stems seals/guide are done for. I am flip flopping between:

1) Bangernomics - No more engine work and just use a heap of additives / thicker oil (10w/xx) to slow the oil burn. Then scrap it once the cats burn out and fail the MOT.

2) Go all in and drop a few grand on engine rework - potentially full block re-work. But then the car is probably good for another 200k miles.

Both of them seem like logical approaches in my opinion. I just don't like the idea of driving something into the ground because of the engine, when the rest of the car is still great.

It's often not a question of how much it's worth but more a question of what it's worth to you.
Cost of replacement is the overiding factor I use on our 210. If cost of replacement is less than cost of repair fix it.
Lifters aren't expensive or difficult to replace on most cars.

For example our M112 a single lifter is £15.
