Hi. I have a 57 plate 320 clk cdi. Which I have owned for just over a week. I have tried to check the oil level. It is not done through the "speedo". And the handbook only really covers petrol models for the engine compartment. There is however a red capped dipstick at the rear of the engine on the right hand side. Which I took as a transmission dipstick, others say it is for the engine oil.

Pull it out and look at the colour of the oil. If it's yellow it's engine oil, if it's pinkish it aut gearbox oil, if it's black it's due a change (although being a diesel it goes black in no time at all).

It is black. And does smell like engine oil. The red cap put me off along with the position of it.
Thank you.

Thanks. It has to be the engine dipstick. Even though it looks more like the gearbox dipstick. What a relief...
