Hi Guys

I purchased a 2016 E220d recently and I am getting the following red warning message show at one point or another on most drives. It flashes up and then disappears after a few seconds, when I go into Service > Messages nothing shows.

Engine oil pressure
Stop
Switch off engine

Has anyone seen this message before and any ideas if its anything serious. If there was an actual serious issue and you were meant to stop, surely would the message not persist instead of vanishing after a few seconds? The previous owner did tell me that this message had come up in past and he claimed that he took it to get looked at and was told its a non-issue perhaps a faulty sensor or some kind. What do you guys think? Any experience of this? Its worth noting the message doesn't actually specify whether the oil pressure is high or low.

Also not sure if related, on a motorway drive last week a message came up once saying low engine oil please add 1ltr. I've ordered some oil to add, however the message hasnt come up again and when I check the engine oil level on the dash I would say it shows as mid way between high and low. Again anyone had any experience of this?

Thanks, appreciate any help on this. 20210708_104539.jpg

I don't have an E class.
I would be tempted to make a 'dip stick' and check the oil level the old-fashioned way.

Hi thanks for the reply @mattkh

What do you mean by make a dip stick? I assume you mean shove something down into the engine oil bay however how would I know whats considered high/low? Thanks

Good point.
How about 1.Drain the engine oil. 2.Look up spec for engine oil capacity. 3.Put that much engine oil in. 4. Put dip stick in. Make a mark on the dip stick.

I must admit I'm slightly baffled by the message regarding pressure. I was under the impression it was oil level that was measured in Mercs, not pressure. The reasoning being the pumps never failed so level measurement is satisfactory. Have things changed?

Sounds like possible low oil level. I would not drive it until you are sure what is happening, you could cause major damage.

I would take it to a local MB specialist who knows what they are doing.

If level is very low, pressure can be low too, as there is not enough circulating oil for the pump to maintain pressure.

Yep, understand all that. Just surprised 'low level' wouldn't have flashed up first.
(Thinking further on the level vs pressure warning, it was possibly because level sensors are regarded as more reliable than pressure sensors?)

Hi @curious Funnily enough since I posted this the message hasnt come on in the last day or so but I do expect it to randomly come up soon as since I have had the car (maybe 2 weeks), the message has come up on 75% of journeys at some time or another.

The more I have spoken about this with others I get the feel it may be an engine oil pressure sensor/switch issues or even perhaps the associated wiring.

As mentioned already the previous owner claims the message has been coming on for the two years or his ownership, had it been an genuine oil pressure issue I am sure the engine would have seized by now. Having said that I plan to get it seen to by someone as I would rather not risk it

Dont faff about making a dipstick.
You can get workshop dipsticks off ebay and they send a sheet denoting the correct level.
