Engine oil replacement by Sealey vacuum pump

Well I’ve finally got round to trying the suction pump for the first time and I’m super impressed It removed 9 litres of engine oil in 40 minutes which included one emptying session as the unit has a capacity of 6 litres. The overall quality of the Sealey unit is very good and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another. It’s a very long time since I‘ve changed the oil on a car and must admit to have really enjoyed the task.

Thanks to all those on the forum who recommended suction pumps it‘s certainly 10 times better than having to jack the car up, remove under panels and crawl about underneath

100% agreed. But you must monitor the amount drained, and when I'm refilling, I only put in 6 instead of the 6.5 ltrs. Run it, then let it settle, and check the level again, adjusting as needed. Also as the patio where I do my oil changing is sloped, I have to jack up one side of the car, so the level is biased towards where the dipstick tube is in any case...and I don't mind jacking it a bit higher than needed to bring it 100% level. But it has to be said.... vacuuming is the best way to change the oil.

My Sealey is 6.5L and takes out 6.5L but upon it's failure I'll get a 9L .

It's the only way if you have a Smart. Once I'd done the Smart that way it was a no brainer for the others.

Yep it's life changing for DIY when you have a Sealey or Pela and a vehicle with a filter element at the top of the engine. Total no mess job.

The electric extractor did mine in 10 mins with warm oil. 40 mins seems long time was the oil cold?

Yes ran the engine for 5 mins so the oil was warm, 40 mins included emptying 6 litres, I spent the rest of the time changing the oil filter and cleaning the engine. I looked at the Sealey 9 litre unit but thought it a bit pricey

My Pela is 4.5l I think which is fine for small petrols but a bit annoying with wife's CLK CDi having to empty part way and as the Viano 3.0CDi I've just bought has an even larger sump capacity I've treated myself to a bargain 9l Sealeyalike as in Gazwould's post above.

Interesting to see how you get on with this lookalike - the Sealey 9 litre unit is circa £117 on EBay so almost twice the price of the 6 litre

Well most impressed by the "budget Sealey". Very quick and easy. Loads better than the smaller football shape Pela I've had for many years. Easily extracted just over 9.5l from the 3.0 CDi. Bargain really for what it does.

With a larger footprint that's going to be a lot more stable .

I like the vacuum pump on the side increases capacity and at <£50 a good price point

Yes the amount of time the vacuum lasts compared with the small Pela is most impressive. Far less need to return and re-pump while doing other jobs.
