Just a query, off shooting from cyclesi,s thread, having just read through the comments of that thread, it provoked me to dig out my two service sheets, one very recent, primarily because Mobile 1 oil, which I know the name, is frequently mentioned. My quandry, is that my dealership has been putting in Shell Helix 5w/40 (high spec), oil, myself never heard of it, is it inline with Mobile 1 quality wise?. Would anyone like to give their thoughts on this oil,s suitabilty in a 06 E55 AMG. Have I been sold an inferior oil!. I would very much like to hear the techies comments as I am due to take it back to the dealership this coming Saturday for its first MOT, and an extended warrenty purchase. In the event that its a poor quality oil, I will be letting this dealership have my thoughts on the subject. Do Mercedes not specify a particular oil for each model of car!

Thankyou for that Whitenemesis, read through your attachment, educated me a little, very grateful, but further like to ask to weather you know where Mobile 1 oil falls in its clasification, is that a 5w/40 oil also. I,d go and get my manuel out of the car to check my cars specification, but the wifes taken it out.

Shell helix is widely used now instead of Mobile I there is little difference between 5w 40 and 0w 40, the Ow is used more in cold climates.

The important bits are the specs the 229.1, 3. or 5 and 5.5 in some cars

Suggest you check out Shell's website. Helix Ultra is a fully synthetic oil and meets MB 229.5 spec.

I think that is well worth doing anyway - then when they have seen you in that frame of mind on a good day, they will be less likely to want to see you when you are angry.

That is all you need to know. Forget all the complexities. Your handbook gives the MB spec the oil needs to meet and your Mb dealer will use oils that do just that. I carry a litre of oil to the MB spec in case topping up is needed.

Indeed your handbook does give you the spec, but time moves on, as does the oil improvements. My car book says 229.1 but these days I could use 229.5.

I see that Halfords own oil now come in 229.3.

I have always used Millers Oils on previous vehicles. Having checked with Millers , they recommned their XF Longlife 3 which is a fully synth 5w30 oil to MB 229.51.

Has anyone any experience of this and is 5w30 acceptable rather than a 0w30 or 0w40?

I wondered whether I would get Mobil 1 or Shell Helix, when I wanted to buy a top up for my AMG, and out came the Mobil 1, I asked regarding the Shell Helix, and was told that as my car was an AMG it needed Mobil 1, and as it had always been run on Mobil 1 from new, they would carry on supplying it and servicing it with Mobil 1, unless otherwise instructed by myself.
