Driving back from North Yorkshire in my 1998 E240 estate (W210 with 93K on the clock) I noticed that when I was doing about 50 mph at around 2000rpm, if I tried to increase speed gradually, without kick-down or manual change, the engine seemed to 'pulse' continuously every second until I stopped trying to increase speed, and looking at the rev counter could see the 'pulse' in the needle of the dial, with the revs dropping very slightly.
If I down-shifted and accelerated hard in a lower gear, there was no 'pulsing' and the car acclerated smoothly, and otherwise the car drove normally.
Anyone any ideas what this could be?
