Anyone have any idea on the engine temp for the 2001 320 cdi? My car during the (English) winter sat at 40c, then a few days ago this has jumped half way up the gauge to 80c and seems to sit just above. The weather is a little warmer, but I did not think it would make such a difference. Not problems etc, just a question.

Any views?

I would suggest check your coolant level, if that's ok, you could have a dodgy temperature sensor, or stuck thermostat. Either way, a new thermostat comes complete with a temperature sensor and is about £40.

Your coolant temp once at full operating temperature should be at 80-90 regardless of outside conditions. :D

Do beware that thermostats exhibiting erratic behavior can change their mind whilst the car is running, sticking in the fully closed position resulting in severe coolant loss when the engine boils up, a new stat now not next month may save you some roadside troubles.

Running an engine long term at 40 is not good for it, the oil will not perform to its best and wear of the engines innards will be much greater than you would want.

If you see a sudden change for the hotter (than 80-90) stop and investigate the coolant level, if its OK run with the heater on hot opening the windows and roof to control the cabin temperature, get the stat changed asap.
