Hi

Now this is going to sound totaly crazy but does anyone know if its possible to fit a 3.0 ltr engine into the 500 chassis!!.
This 5.0 ltr "lump" is just killing me petrol wise,Now if it can be done how big a job is it?,and I know there will quite alot of you out there saying "just sell it,and buy the smaller car",well I would if I could, but here in Scotland (well Strathclyde anyway),its dam near impossible, quite simply no one wants "big" cars like up here, well no one I know and quite obvioualy no one in the area.
Iv'e had it in the paper and in other sites, and there just simply has been "no takers",so basically this is a "last resort",to keeping it.
Like i say I most (if not all) people go bigger, well nope, not me I think I'm going to have to come down to a 3 ltr or round about that size.So if anyone can help with this,I'd appreciate any help what so ever, thanks in advance.

Are you really going to save money by the time you buy the engine , possibly modify the car and all the time involved too ? It is not just easier to run the car?

ohh , the other option is to buy a fiesta diesel popular to run about in.

Yea,I know what your saying,so I take it that it will need modified to fit a smaller lump,I thought se/sec/l,were all basically the same chassis, thats why I said that, and plus I just cant sell it (cause' of the engine size).
It would be easier probably to run,But I'm getting very p****d off, putting money in it every dam day,see I like to keep it "topped up",as I have done with all my cars/bikes.
I really dont know what to do with this thing, thats why I "threw" the question at the forum.

Merc.

When i had the old 250D i Wanted more power, i considered fitting a turbo, or replacing the engine with a 3ltr unit. I sought Andy's advice, and was put off the idea when he pointed out the pitfalls with regard to resale value.

As i see it this would apply to you, but in reverse, i would have had a 250D masquerading as a 250TD/300D, you would have a 500SE, masquerading as what??

I think Fuzzer hit the nail on the head, get shot of it via a trade in, and get something that came from the factory with a smaller/more economical engine.

Dave

I would trade it in,but I just lost my job,at the begining of the week, B*****D!!!!!!!.
So hence I'm gonna struggle to keep this thing on "juice", basically money right now will be as "tight as a ducks a**e".
And I also fear the car will start to deteriorate due to not being able to cover even the simplist of repairs, and even (as you guys know) a "simple" repair on that car could cost Hahahahahahahahahhahahaha,I really dont know what I'm going to do with it,I will try to sell/swap it but so far no good at all.

Then again after writing that above I really dont know why I wrote the first letter,I think I should have taken Andy's advice when I joined this forum and that to "see a shrink".
I thought maybe I could have got a mate do it (the change over that is) could I have found a "lump"somewhere, but I honestly think I'll have to abandon most ideas Iv'e had, for a while at least.
Cause' after all who do you guys know that has ever "ran" a 500 Merc on the "rock & roll",I dont!!

In a previous life i was a member of another forum for Rover AAARRGGHHH!!!

one of the main topics on there was the fuel consumption on the 2.7 Honda lump, used in the 827's and Sterlings. For a V6 it drank the 4star like a V12, they really are horrendus engines to run.

Anyway there was talk of this kit you could buy (no idea of the price) where by when you hit crusing speed, 3 of the 6 injectors switch off, thus halving the consumption. One bloke had one fitted to his older 2.5 sterling, and it worked. BMW are the pioneers of this apparently, and some of their bigger cars have it fitted (apparently)

Might be an idea.....either that or go get the Fiesta.!!!

Seriously though, swap it for the smaller Merc you mentioned earlier.

I don't think you would see a vast amount of difference in fuel consumption between the 500 V8 and the 280/ 300 6 cylinder engines.  Engine wear is heavier onthe 6's which might explain why fuel consumption suffers with age more on these than on the V8's.  At getting on for 195,000 miles my 500 SL is marginally  more ecconomical than 280's of similar mileage.

I would suggest finding one of the places that do DIY kits in LPG form.
That way you keep the awsome exhaust note of a V8 but spend less on fuel than someone would on a 190D.   It won't reduce your car's resale value either- when it comes to sell you can either strip back to standard issue or use the LPG as a selling feature.

I have some web site addresses and contact details if you need them.
