I was looking at buying an OBD system for home diagnostics.

I was looking at this :

http://www.autotec-direct.com/eobd-diagnostic-interface-and-software-kit-560-p.asp

This would be used on My 2002 ML-270 CDI & 2000 CLK-430

I asked the retailer if it would work and got the following reply:

"Provided the two Mercedes Vehicles have the 16 pin plug AND are EOBD compliant it would work, But being pre 2004 diesel and 2001 petrol they may not support the EOBD protocols."

Will this work on my cars or not ?? Any ideas ??

The cheapest standalone reader that will also do the auto trans codes is £176 .

Mercs are ahead of the game, in that my BY2001 ML is EOBD compliant (16 pin, just under the steering wheel) and works fine with Car Soft. I cant vouch for autotec, but carsoft works well.

Is it nice to have the carsoft,,I have been thinking about it, and it will help my kids by saving them from paying the 40%

Many thanks guys, I will go and Google CarSoft now.

Is there any difference between OBD & EOBD, as they were confident that the standalone reader would work with these cars, but didn't know about the software solution.

I'm a little confused after re-reading the CarSoft documentation! OBD-II and EOBD are mechanically the same (ie. same connector) with EOBD using CAN. The ML has CAN and indeed CarSoft reads/configures by CAN for some functions, but I cant determine 100% if BY2001 is fully EOBD compliant. It certainly is OBD-II compliant! Will keep on looking into this!

Carsoft is expensive and you really need to be in a position to do your own repairs to get value for money from it. It didnt really help me with my failed gearbox as I wasnt in a position to strip the box down, so a simple reader may have been sufficient in this case!

I did have a Quick look at the CarSoft site, and it looks as if it will be "cost prohibitive" for me (esppecially when they say they will pay for your air fair up to the value of 5% of the purchase price )

If you do get any further with clarifying the difference I would be very interested.

Cheers, Mark

Hi Mark,,the cheap ones will re set engines codes etc, if you want to go into the car set up, then you need an arm and leg version there is nothing else out there under £2k

It is really just to do a bit of home diagnostics, check and re-set TC's etc...

Most of the cheaper handheld units will only do the engine, but I was also wanting it to cover the Auto Trans for all 3 of my cars. It looks as if the cheapest handheld unit that will do the Auto box aswell is +/- £180, or +/- 80 for the one that I use my laptop with.

Spoke to Gendan (the makers of the software and interface) and was told that it would only work with my jag, as despite having the 16pin plugs my ML & CLK use Mercedes own protocols.

Bought this instead
http://www.autotec-direct.com/maxidiag-european-vehicle-scanner-eu702-565-p.asp

Plugged it into the ML, and immediately came up with the answers to a few questions I had recently (new MAF already fitted, and a brake pedal switch needing replaced).

Great bit of kit.

Does anyone know where the socket is on a W208 ???

Oh Bo&&&cks...... 32pin... I was told that it was 16 pin. At least it will work on the other 2 cars.

What about this for service.

The company I bought the reader from is going to send me out an adaptor so that the unit can also read my CLK - no charge, just try it and let us know...

They also told me that the manufacturer would be making their own replacement leads to fit manufacturer / model specific requirements.
