I have owned my 1997 E300td Automatic for a little over 12mths and during this time I have had it into the local dealer 4 times for this fault. It happens at very random occasions the car looses the ability to accelerate the dash peeps at you and reads EPC Engine Electronics to regain drive I have to pull over and switch off engine for 20 seconds or so and then restart. The dealer now tells me I need a new diesel pump after various other things  have been done. Does anyone have a clue? Should I trust the dealer? Please Help.Merky Al

Firstly have the dealer give you the exact details of the fault code and post them on.
The pump only has a speed sensor and a rack position sensor.  Both are hall effect coils with no moving parts.
The speed is measured by a serrated ring passing the coil and the rack position is measured by the rack moving a rod therough the coil and comparing this to a similar coil with a fixed rod.
My bet is that you have a bad connection onto the pump or a wire in the harness breaking.  I have recently heard of this on a G Wagon.

Either play yourself or go to your nearest Bosh diesel specialist.

Thanks for you help Dieselman, unfortunately i have`nt got the fault code to post on. I have had the car back to the MB dealer they reset the computer but no change. Ive booked it in again and will request the codes.

Its looking like the pump may get changed at some point soon but if this does not fix the problem I think I`ll go shopping for an Audi A8 or A6 four wheel drive, coz them merks are very poor in winter conditions.

Thanks again

Best wishes for the New Year.
