Appologies for starting a new thread, following on from my first one posted last week.

After a week of behaving faultlessly, my CLK decided that it 'doesn't like sundays', and once again refused to start. Having rung the RAC (Again), and sat waiting on Morecambe seafront (not a place to be after dark), the car eventually decided to start some 30 mins later.

Anyway, my question is : Can the dealer simply plug in to my car and tell why it failed to start ??...Does the computer store this information, and if so for how long does it keep it ??...The on-board display shows 'no malfunctions'.

Thanks once again.

If this only happened once, then it may not be stored on ECU as a fault code. However if it happens several times then it becomes a stored fault and cannot be erased exept with the test eqpt or a flat/disconnected battery. Also if the cause of this problem was not electrical, there would be no fault code. Sometimes a hot fuel pump can fail and after 30 mins cooling down the car will start, but no fault code. I would still have it checked with DAS.

Sorry for being so stupid, but what is 'DAS' ???

Looking at this web site, the crankshaft sensor appeared to be a safe bet. Yesterday when the car wouldn't start, it had been sat for 2 hours, so on that basis, I was discounting any 'hot' related faults...

Thanks for the info...I'm still trying to find my way here...

Would this equipment be available at a good independant garage,
or is it a main dealer only option ???

Which reminds me...... Is there anywhere on the site where people
recommend local independant garages ??

I agree with your self diagnosis. Crank angle sensor is most likely culprit. Fault codes can fail to occur if this component is faulty.

I join Uncle Benz here and say the crankshaft sensor, there have been a lot of late, though they are sealed hall effect switches, does moisture get in ?

This time last year we onlt had a couple.

How big a job is it to replace the crank sensor yourself ??

I only ask, as it's a bit of a pain for me to actually get the
car to the dealers...

I had a look at the link when I got home, and that diagram made things look as clear as mud  and I'm a design engineer who does similar drawings all day long. Maybe things will look clearer when I pop the bonnet and compare the diagram with real-life.

Approx how much does a new sensor cost ?

Is it easy to tell if the old one is faulty ?

and finally, do you need to remove any other components to get access ?

Many thanks once again for all the great advice.

There is only the one clamp bolt on the rear of the engine accessed from the nearside and one electrical plug.

I believe the cost is around £50 and very easy to fit.
