I have just gotten a check engine light and borrowed my neighbor's OBD II code reader. I get two codes; PO170 & PO173. They are generic and the definition is "Fuel trim malfunction, Bank 1 & 2".
Can someone tell me what the problem is, and is it owner fixable.

Thanks for your help,

Fuel trim

Hi
These are not MB codes but I think they probably translate as "self adaptation at limit bank 1 and 2 " best guess you need a new air mass meter
good luck

Is there a list of these error codes available anywhere for us to explore so as we can check to tell if our dealers are explaining things right?

Or is that a bit of a daft question what with mercs never going wrong and that?

Fault Code Reader

Hi All

The 'error codes' that are occasionally mentioned ... are these the same as fault codes?

I have seen a small handheld box with an alphanumeric display and a cable and plug which presummably plugs into an M-B, somewhere. It was called a Fault Code Reader.

Is there any point to owning such a tool, always assuming it's not too expensive? Would it help diagnosing problems?

i bought a scantool for 90 quid - and adapted it to be used in my 140 - by cutting off the plug and re-wiring it to a mb plug (a draper re-set tool)

have a look at digimoto.com and scantool.net
(if u do a uk search i think the company will come up - look for obdII code reader)

i got it to read out an error code (forced by unplugging a temp sensor)eventually - but my car doesnt have a 'check engine' light - i have all the software / links at home not here.

Fault Code Reader

Hi guydewdney

Is it a useful tool to own? Can it help with diagnosing/repairing faults or is it the kind of tool that provides a readout that is only of value when discussing the problem over the 'phone with a technician?

Is this a silly question?

I have been reading about fault codes and one question keeps cropping up. I am not able to answer it myself but I'm hoping another member can. It is this. What kinds of faults are logged by the ECU and are they time & date stamped? In other words does the ECU keep a log (a diary) of faults recording when they occur, when they are cleared? Or are the faults logged with no time or date information ... as a list of fault codes?

When faults are remedied by the service technician are their fault codes automatically deleted by the the ECU or does the technicain have to reset them with a tool? I know that some fault codes have to be reset manually. Either way ... is the log is cleared?

Let's take an example. If a bulb blows, an indicator (say), does the ECU record it, OR is this type of fault so insignificant or unimportant that there is no detection circuit associated with bulb failure, hence it is not detected by the ECU?

Take another example. If a brake pad wears to the point where it has to be replaced (a significant fault?), does the ECU record the fact that wear had been detected and the pad has been replaced?

I assume SRS, ASR, BAS faults are recorded because they are potentially life threatening if nothing is done?

Or is it a case that the ECU only records faults associated with the engine and transmission, etc., and other major systems, like braking, fluid levels, etc.?

With a car as sophisticated as a Mercedes many systems must be monitored and their faults recorded for subsequent interrogation.

Perhaps it is an easier question to ask what systems are not monitored and therefore do not have fault codes?

REGARDS Phil

I have a '98 W202 which recently went in to my local specialist. With the keys I was also handed back a printout (about 10 pages) of all the fault codes that had been stored. Looking at that printout there is no time / date stamp on any faults - just a record of the fault. In order to diagnose a problem they cleared the fault memory, drove the car around and then checked again for faults. Presumably there's no guarantee that the ECU can accurately (or vaguely) know the time / date and therefore no point in building the information in to the fault logging procedure?

So far as whether the ECU automatically clears the fault log when they're fixed - the ECU doesn't know whether a fault is fixed, only that it did occur and whether it is still occurring. Therefore the fault log has to be 'manually' cleared. Having said all that, on my printout there seems to be some distinction between 'current' and 'stored'. Please note I am only talking from experince of mine.

The codes on my printout do not resemble Midlifecrisis' tome though I guess it's no surprise that as models are developed so fault codes are revised and revamped.

Having looked at my printout I would be interested in getting a fault code reader to monitor any faults myself. I would guess that even if I could get the hardware and software, though, it would be pretty expensive.

Hi 996jimbo

Ten pages of error codes! That sounds an awful lot of information. I wonder if this amount of data is typical during a service? I suppose it depends upon the condition of the vehicle.

I've had my Mercedes around 8 months and it hasn't missed a beat. It's a good reliable performer; no electrical bugs that I'm aware of. Maybe when I get my printout (if I'm presented with one) it'll indicate a host of minor, transient problems. If a fault clears, is that recorded too?

Thanks for letting me know that time information is not recorded along with the fault codes. I guess it is more important to record the fault rather than time at which it occurred. Pity, because time could be important in diagnosing a problem. I guess the ECU has no way of reading date & time information. However, it must record the passage of time in order for the ASSYST system to work.

I have seen several types of fault/error code reader ranging in price from a few tens of pounds to highly sophisticated, computerized models costing thousands.

I went in search of a fault code reader for my own use. I didn't want one that was dedicated to a particular make/type of car although this is possibly the cheapest of options. Neither did I want a reader that was so complex that it would require a PhD to operate. This type of reader is upgradable and can be used with a wide range of makes/types of vehicle. This is the tool for the service technician. Is there a more modestly priced reader, I thought?

Well, I got lucky. I set myself a budget of £150 and I found a solution. You will I find a thread elsewhere about it. See 'Workshop Manuals & Diagnostic Equipment' (Guy Greenwell). I included a picture of my solution with my commentary.

I am a PDA user and I have an IPAQ H5550 which I used for a multitude of uses including GPS navigation. I found I could also use it as a fault code reader. I bought special software from Autoenginuity which included a special diagnostic adapter which plugs into my car and my IPAQ. This equipment is software upgradable and will work with many makes/types of car. I now own a very sophisticated fault code reader and best of all it's portable, you can put it in your pocket or carry it in the car.

Of course, I already had an IPAQ which I didn't include in my budget. I paid about £120 for the software+adapter+shipping from America. There is even a Bluetooth option (I don't have) which enables the reader to be used whilst being driven. The IPAQ does have an onboard clock so it is possible to record errors and time stamp them. Oh, I almost forget ... the IPAQ translates error codes to English-type explanations so you don't have to carry around a heavy cross-reference book. You are not faced with the problem of looking up a 'P8010' error.

My fault code reader will also reset error codes. It's not just for displaying errors. It's more dynamic than that!

I am not sure of the significance of 'current' and 'stored' codes unless the information is used for tracking errors, e.g. do they repeat?

I have seen the list of error codes (or one very similar) to that Mid_Lfe_Crisis has produced. It can be found on the Internet and it can also be found in Haynes-type manuals. It's my understanding that the error codes can be extended to accommodate enhancements in motor vehicle technology.

If it would not be too much trouble would it be possible to include a sample from your printout or did the garage ask for the printout back?

REGARDS Phil

Warning - Serial interface to TWC G3/4m gurnied

Perhaps I should have qualified my "10 pages" claim a little - looking at the printout errors are recorded by certain modules and the format of my printout is one module per page. I'm on my first MB having had my first diagnostic and have never seen these printouts before so have no idea how typical my example is.

Most of the faults relate to low voltage which apparently threw up faults within most modules. Presumably therefore most if the faults are down to a dodgy battery at some time or another.

Phil - if you PM me with your email address I'll send a couple of pages as a pdf file.

Regards,
Jim

I have a 1998 MB and codes P0141 and P0136 came up recently and the county I live in failed the inspection on the car. I was thinking about repairing this myself. Does anyone know how much the parts are and is this a time consuming project. Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Not sure where you are but the code indicates the O2 sensor is u/s. You can buy new sensors off ebay for about £15 and these seem to work ok (i fitted a new sensor to my C180 W203 a few weeks ago). The car has just saied through the MOT test with lower emissions than previous test. The O2 sensors for the W203 C180 from MB cost about £150 each.
