Had the pleasure of ESL failure today, being towed to my Indy at 10pm, not good as I was picking my boys up and parked on double yellow lines.

Oh the joy of MB ownership!!!!!

Do you know. Read these forums regularly and each time I realise how little I understand modern cars.

ESL?

Many moons ago I was an apprentice mechanic at Mann Egerton's in Norwich, even achieved my City & Guilds Certificate.

In those days cars had distributors, points and condensers etc.

Seemed so easy in those days, mind you we used to repair items like dynamo's and such like.

Yes I am that old,

Nowadays I clean the car and that's it, everything else to the dealership.

Happy days.

2002 SL500, 216 CL500, all fully loaded
Many fail on the 204, the new one should be better.

A few weeks back I got the kind of call I dread from the Mrs...
"Car won't start, key dead, tried many times" etc.
She was under a couple of miles away, parked safely with son #1, so they walked home.

I turned up 30 mins later and it started 'on the button'. Fine since.

I had this for seven years on and off...it always started eventually. Then one day it actaually was the ESL. The difference being on all other occasions I could hear the whirr as the ESL disengaged...except that one time. I cut it off...the car wasn't worth anything.

Makes me realise why they replace them both at MB, it's easier (and the make more money)

I had a V8 discovery once and it had this 'intermittent fault', would stop, turn key and it started immediately, sometimes 5 minutes, once 30 minutes later. Turned out to be a dry connection on the immobiliser circuit board, took a lot of searching to find the cause, if I remember correctly it was with the main dealer for two days to nail the damned thing, £31.50 for the part and well north of £200 to get me on the road again.
