Hi,

Every now and then the screen on my dash comes up with a warning saying something along the lines of 'PAS BAS and ESP failure visit workshop.' When this happens however, I can feel no difference when driving and soon as I turn the engine off and back on again the problem has gone away.

Anyone had any similar problems or prehaps no why this is happening?

This should just be a fault with the brake light switch, only £9 and easy to change

That something along the lines of what I wanted to hear! :D

As I am clueless, could you give some more info on why/how this happens and how I would go about changing it please?

The brake light switch is in 2 parts, the light switch itself and the BAS pressure pad, and it is this piece that fails, held on with a 17mm nut above the brake pedal.

Yup! I get this once every three months or so, and like you it goes away when you tunr the ignitionoff and on. I've never had any tangible symptons and indeed the car has just had its 10k mile service and the MB dealer never shouted about anything being wrong.

I think in microsoft speak we have to put it down to a "feature" of the dodgy MB build period.

Thankfully it does not seem to relate to any hugely expensive problem with the cars mechanics (just maybe a glitch with the chip..?).

Where would I get the above mentioned BAS pressure pad and light switch? Is it both that need replacing and is just a case a unscrewing the nut and putting the new one on?

Thanks again

I had this a few times a while ago, tried getting a brake light switch but my 01 C Class does not have one!
I think this has also been put down to failing batteries.
Mine has not come back for about 2 months now so I too am blaming Microsoft

I used to get this on my E class on startup, but if I ran the car for a few inutes and restarted it, the problem went away.

I put up with it for months until one day the car wouldn't turn over. A new battery solved both the starting and the ESP/BAS/ABS warning.

How this comes about is that the huge dip in the voltage when the battery is U/S the car starts and runs on the alternator, but the ABS ,BAS etc has been locked and recorded. by turning off and restarting the battery voltage is high enough not to trigger the ABS etc.

This is fine for most of the time, but a couple of weeks back one car would not reset and had to have the faults cleared, it make you look stupid in your answers.

I'm having the exact same problem with an ML320 that I bought last week. Its an '02 model and whats happining is that the ESP/BAS/ABS lights come on while driving which is then accompanied by some very odd sounds. The best way to describe the sounds are like that caused by a vibration.

The sounds go on and off while driving - usually coming on while driving and stopping when the brake is applied.

The other curiosity is that when the engine is turned off the ABS pump starts to hiss as if venting air. The only way to stop the hissing is to remove and reinsert the relay that controls the ABS system.

The previous owner mentioned he had brake pads, discs and sensors changed a couple of months ago. He did mention the warning lights coming on before I bought it from him but says he never had the hissing noise from the ABS.

Is it possible that the relay is faulty? Or perhaps I should just replace the sensors as mentioned above? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Cheers
