ESP light / Yaw sensor / Scanner Tool options

Hi all,
I will try to keep this brief, to ease reading.
Car: '05 C-Class Sports Coupe, C180K.
Problem: ESP warning (MOT due soon)
Question: Should I take to someone with Star Diagnostics? Or buy a 3rd party reader to adapt the Yaw Sensor?

Basically, got MOT'd last year, had an ESP fault, but garage said wasn't an MOT fail and kindly gave me the fault codes;
C1161, C1152, C1151, C1150 - all referencing B24/15 Rotation Speed and Lateral Accln Sensor.

I bought a second hand Lateral Accln sensor and installed it, but looking online it seems it requires 'adaptation'. To do this I need to perform a 'road test', which can only be instigated by a Star machine.
However, I did read online somewhere, that a Merc owner had 'accidentally' instigated the road test when using his iCarsoft MB V2 machine.

So...I was wondering, might it be worth me buying an icarsoft MB V2 machine to attempt this? Or am I messing with fire? Would an icarsoft MB V2 even help me in this respect? Or is there even a cheaper scanner that I could use?

I changed YAW sensor on a w203 2005 sport coupe and it didnt need any calibrating?

Dont tell me you have my old(well it was a mates car I was sorting out) car joking

Did you buy an exact like for like (all numbers including the Q number) ?

YAW sensor is the same as Latreral Accelleration Sensor(its been a while)

So did you have fault codes before the replacement?
If so, did they just clear on fitment of new part?
Yeah my parts are the same pn and q number.

I gathered I had to do some calibration as ;

and
b) this is what my local Mercedes dealer also said when I called to ask about part numbers and replacement procedures. They just said they could do the adaptation and it would cost about 60 quid.

Bit loathed to go to dealers without knowing a bit more about it all, but then but reticent to spend 140 quid on a scanner that I'm not sure I'll need either.

Apparently it's now an mot fail (wasn't last year), so I've got a month to sort.

oNE OF THE GUYS IN THAT LINK ALSO SAYS HE DIDNT HAVE TO CODE

i TRIED 5 DIFFERENT yaw SENSORS

i HAD 3X W203 in my possession AT The time (oops just looked up to see caps was on lol ) so I pinched the YAW from each car and bought 2 off ebay .

With the incorrect ones the car was fine then the error would come back soon after.

WHen i bought like for like no message came up and we were good to go

Do you STILL have the warning message ESP not avail coming up? and do you realise that means you have traction off? I had a VERY scary moment (180 spin in wet ) when I had this issue and ESP fault meant for me it was OFF

If the warning is still on maybe the unit you bought it faulty or incorrect?

I think you need an expert to chime in here , Im just giving you an insight into my adventure dealing with this issue & how I resolved

Yeah, interesting to hear your experience.
So it sounds like it's potentially not necessary to do a road test/adaptation. Maybe the second hand unit I bought is faulty, like you say. I will see if I can find another one somewhere and give it a go. Maybe third unit lucky!?

Just ordered 2 more second hand yaw sensors, same pn, 10 quid each. Worth a try at that price. Advertised as fully working, but I doubt they've been tested to be honest.

Just thought. Would the ESP light disappear automatically if I'd replaced with a good sensor, or does the fault need clearing with a scanner (is it stored in memory?). Wondering whether to buy an icarsoft scanner to help...

In my experience a good sensor will turn that system off

FUnnily enough I found the old YAW sensor in a crate of other stuff I refuse to throw away just yesterday lol

Yes I dont think these things are tested

I dnt see how or why they would get damaged though TBH

if you bought exact like for like I really would have thought that would go off, unless its something else? Have you scanned it since then?

If you were local I would have put it on my scanner (not used in a while) to see what came up


MAybe the new YAW is good. But the fault lies elsewhere with something else? what about the other codes?
Wheel speed sensor? ABS sensor ?
HAd any work on brakes before this or alignment ?

Hi. Not scanned it since, no. Thinking about buying a scanner to be honest. Esp fault still showing on dash though. Codes taken last year attached for info.

A yaw sensor for your model should be plug and play. Where is it bolted? On back floor of boot or under front seat?
I wouldn't even consider buying second-hand sensors - you'll only end up paying more in the long run. Get the MB item.

The iCarsoft MB II or MB V will detect the fault and clear the code once the replacement has been fitted.

Back of the boot, yes.
I was quoted 280 from local merc dealer to source and fit a new one. Not knowing for sure it is the sensor at fault, I decided it was worth a punt on a second hand one. Like for like part number.

Hmmmm, interesting. Received one of my ordered two ordered second hand sensors today. Installed, and now warning message says ESP NOT AVAILABLE. It said ESP FAULTY with the previous units. What's the difference?! Aaarghhh!

Both pretty much mean the same thing - NO ESP & sideways action if youre driving in the wet be carefull

£280 for the sensor ouch. Whats wrong with 2nd hand if its from a reputable breakers ? It should work? YEs they probably dont test as we said above but £280 for a sensor on a w203 is alot of money

Buy a scanner
You can always sell it on
Or use it for other cars
THis is why I bought mine. Sod not knowing. PLus the trail and error side of things its good to have one. GOod investment IMO

IT'S GONE!
After fitting the new second hand unit and initially getting the ESP UNAVAILABLE alert, after driving it down the road a bit, it disappeared! So far (fingers crossed) it hasn't come back!
I was so close to buying a scanner too.
Sounds like one might be a good idea in the future maybe, but could do without the expense at the moment.

If you have had an ESP failure message it can mean the steering angle sensor calibration is off. You can get this is the battery has gone flat or been disconnected. To reset the steering angle start the engine and drive down the road turning the wheel left and right . Switch off then restart and it will go away (IF it WAS the steering angle sensor).
A code reader will flag this up if the error is there (not a generic one - an MB specific one that can read all the modules).

OK. Thanks for the tip. Previous codes (#9 above) suggested lateral acceleration sensor, so was concentrating on this, which appears to have worked now, finally. Useful info for the future though. Ta.

The steering angle resetting is probably why it went away after a short drive once you'd cured the other problem though.
