EU's 120g/km of CO2 laws opposed
The European Parliament's industry committee wants vehicle manufacturers to get an additional three years to hit the proposed 120 g/km ceiling for carbon dioxide emissions.

The European Commission has proposed the industry, with the exception of manufacturers of larger cars, should comply with this maximum by 2012.

However, the industry committee wants manufacturers to be given significantly more time to adapt their engine and exhaust designs.

Instead, it has proposed a staged introduction of the limit, with 25% of a manufacturer's cars hitting 120g/km in 2012, 50% in 2013, 75% in 2014 and 100% in 2015.

The committee said in a report: 'This flexibility is needed to allow manufacturers the leeway they need for development.'

The proposed changes will need to be approved by the full parliament and the EU Council of Ministers to become law.

However, resistance can be expected from the parliament's environment committee, which will make its proposals on September 9.

Ministers are expected to make the final vote in October.

I was originally against this as I felt it was a greenie plot to get us all driving nasty jap euroboxes or taking he train. However, I can't help wondering how much this threat has had to do with such things as the new eco BMWs and this supposedly revolutionary 220 engine (160 emissions & 320 performance allegedly) Merc are talking about. If it was the impetus, then I say keep piling on the pressure.

I think this emissions is a sham, I couldn't care less about my cars impact on the environment. CO2 is actually one of the least harmful things to come out of a cars exhaust and the man made CO2 based climate change model is highly debateable @ the best of times. We focus on the Co2 (or our highly contemptuous socialist government does) as its easily measured and taxed.

I do care about the fuel efficiency of my car, and without this leglistlation the open market would respond by providing engines as you mentioned due to the high fuel prices and the liklihood that oil prices will remain high $100dollar/barrel for quite some time.

The EU is far to powerful, far to invasive in our personal lives, and in our economies and this CO2 thing is just one of them. We should be proud that we emit CO2, its a status of being a Western Economy.

When they stop spewing tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere from manufacturing, generating electricity and heating homes and then when they stop spewing tonnes of methane into the atmosphere from burping livestock *THEN* is the time to worry about the impact of european car emissions.

Emissions don't interest me but economy does. I have changed my driving style, and also don't make as many unnecessary journeys as I used to.

x2, and the market forces have responded accordingly, diesel car sales are up, people are driving 20% less IIRC. This would have happened without government intervention and those that contribute heavily to society (thru paying more tax by virtue of the fact they earn more) could still enjoy a more powerful car. This emissions legistlation is the contemptuous socialism of the EU in action as it punishes the better off.

I try and get the best economy most of the time as it is very much in my best interest. However the engine cries out to be used to its full potential and I have the breaking strain of a kit kat.
I try to combine trips whenever possible and use the Caravelle less than the Mercedes purely because of fuel economy. Although taking the Mercedes to the stables doesn't do anything for keeping it clean :(

Well, I've done my bit for the UK's CO2 emissions CON. I've just changed my ML to Spanish plates - so no more UK VED to pay, and one less vehicle contributing to Mr Bean & Co's trough for them to get their snouts further into...:p

Is the equivelent of VED cheaper in spain. I thought the Eurobloc were CO2 silly, for example Ireland has just daft Co2 bands- but they are a dim lot.

Yes, lots cheaper. Around 100 Euros a year. Whats more, cars are actually catered for. Large cars parks - with shaded areas to park under - in the retail parks. In the local town, the shops (on both sides of the road) have a large lay-by outside, so you can park outside the shop you want to visit. Not spotted a single parking meter since we arrived..anywhere..!! Magic, pure magic. :D

In three months time there will only be 3 years left for manufacturers to meet the 120gms/km average for all their cars. At the moment, Mercedes do not have a single car that meets the target. The nearest is the new A160cdi facelift which in manual fom achieves 128 and in cvt auto gets 142. What chance is there that in 3 years they will achieve a 120 average for all their cars?
