Hello all.

As mentioned in t'other thread, the exhaust tips on ye olde CLS don't look like they've ever seen a brush/sponge!

Tried an old wheel brush & fairly warm shampoo, then some Meguiar's chrome cleaner..... barely touched it.

Looks like a lot of road tar, and the ubiquitous hardened coking.

Just wondering if any of you have had better success at rescuing said trim?

I attacked mine with steel wool and Meg's NXT All Metal polish. It shifted the sooty deposits ok.

M6 Cab - prior to that, SL63 AMG, A-M V8 Vantage, SL55, SL500 and many more
get some 0000 grade wire wool (from most hardware shops) - it will not scratch

Many ta's folks.

They are indeed in a bit of a baked-on state!!!

A good soaking (about a minute) in CIF Stainless Steel cleaning spray, followed by some agitation with a "brillo" type pad/sponge, then a liberal application of Astonish oven/cookware cleaning paste, with said "brillo" type sponge..... then rinse.

A vast improvement for 5 mins work.

Couple more goes required this eve me thinks as still not satisfactory - but at least they now look like stainless exhaust tips from 10-15 paces!!!

Perhaps a good buffing with Meguiar's Chrome juice this eve will do the trick!

Just a revisit, in an almost-related way...... exhaust tips seem to be coking far quicker than any other car I've had before.

Did 400-or-so motorway miles yesterday, very little dawdling/town work and they were pretty black when I parked up last night.

I'll try another tankful of injector-juice, but not had other cars suffer this!

Do you use the Forte stuff?

Not heard of that! Is that injector cleaner, or chrome cleaner???

Wirralchap - I've got Meguiar's but its more the speed at which the exhaust cokes up that is now troubling me!

That is the only thing that will polish a pre 1932 RR rad;)

To keep them clean it best to polish the inside of the pipe as far as you can:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yes, its not so much the cleaning side now - a couple of goes with various products and the Mk1 Elbow Grease has got them looking more respectable.

Problem now is that they very quickly turn black! Have just picked up some Comma Diesel D-Tox whilst out, will run that through the system and see what happens.

Also saw a product called Soot Filter Cleaner (think it was either by STP or Redex), wondered if anybody has any experience of that? Claims to be good for unclogging DPFs resulting from town-driving.

I shall get my local chimney sweep to pay a visit.....

Not had the problem on other diesely cars..... am hoping its the product of fairly low miles done by first owner, hopefully pootling about to the golf club once a week. :)

Had a re-read of TeamSPB's CLS project thread yesterday, and ST4 made a comment that caught my attention... I just assumed that a car like a CLS of 2007 vintage or newer would have a DPF..... But it seems not.

Don't recall seeing one listed on the build-sheet, so could well explain my fast-coking exhaust tips???!!!
