Hello and welcome to the forum, these things are not my cup of tea, are you sure that they are exhaust fumes and not oil fumes from the breather

If I can have the first 6 VIN numbers I can check for any known problems

The only thing listed is the dust shields around the doors and A pillar there is a mod seal now for that now.

I do not know if this would fix it for as you say it is nearly alway drawn in from the rear drag.

Other than this all I can think of is that you check all of the door seals

Sorry thats the best that I can do

Hi Allstars.
Just read your query.
I once owned a Citroen car and the tailgate did not quite close properly.
Resulted in what you are experiencing.
Get someone to help you, either drive the vehicle for a short distance whilst someone in the back checks the seal of the doors (but not for too long as you may gas them to death) or better still...... YOU get in the back of the van whilst your assistant directs a steady stream of water around the areas where the doors close. Ingress of water is obviously where your problem is.
Sort it as soon as, or it may start to affect your health.
Bren.

Hi
Is the vaneo based on the A class?
If yes then the A class is known for petrol smells.
Check the flexible petrol hoses.
What year is the Vaneo?
