Exhaust rattle

I have a 1997 C200.

The exhaust has started to make a loud rattling noise from the middle section.

Does this mean that the cat is jiggered?

Seen a lot of heat covers rust through and drop onto the exhaust, have you looked under the car yet??

Yes, there is a bracket on the exhaust that bolts to the gearbox, this needed welding and I thought that was making the noise. But it still does it even after the weld, but nothing else is loose.

Depends what route you wish to take, a lot from Mb parts or patten, i hate patten but it depends on your budget!!

I ain't really got a budget! So MB parts not an option.

Seen some on ebay for £80 - £100, does this sound about right?

If your unsure what the rattle is, i would first get somebody who knew to have a listen first before spending money!

But in the other breath, thats not a bad price!!

On cars with upper and lower CATs the lower ones can be removed without any problems.

The CATs when loose make a tinkling sound

Mine is really loud, like banging a steel drum with large pebbles - hell of a din, but only on tick over. It eases when I accelerate, and disappears completely when cruising or when the engine is warmed up.

No.
I've been underneath when it's been ticking over, and it sounds like whatever it is is rattling around inside.

If you do have 2 CATS cut the box open and remove the ceramic CAT and weld up. thats what i did on my SL320

Went to a local MB specialist who confirmed the cat was jiggered.
Got one on ebay for £95.
Same manufacturer that supplies MB, even got an MB part number stamped on it!

MB price is £730, robbers!

Thanks for all the comments folks.

Just in case this happens to any others.

The Cat I bought off ebay fitted with no problems - no need for tweaks/use of hammer to bend - and is working fine. Also came with a 2 year guarantee.

The supplier is called YES motor spares, and the chap I spoke to (Richard) was very helpful, and seemed a grand chap. He guaranteed 24 hour delivery, even though he didn't have the one I needed in stock, and it was delivered in this time. Can't fault them.
