Hi, what are members using to clean the exhaust tips? So far nothing has been any good, has anyone painted them?

If your exhaust tips are (as I suspect) actually part of the exhaust, removing the bumper and going to town with a small polisher might be easiest to get good access and make the job a little easier.

On the non-63 W212 E-class (well, the E350 CDI anyway), the chrome 'exhaust tips' are actually separate from the exhaust and bolted to the rear bumper/diffuser by three (I think) torx head bolts. So for my car, it's easiest to remove the tips before polishing as otherwise you can't get into the nooks and crannies that are still visible.

On my old V6 w203, the single chrome/stainless exhaust tip was a sleeve that went over the end of the exhaust, and was held on by an allen head cap bolt. Again, I could remove that to polish.

If you can get the 'tips' off, all of the member's suggestions above will be easier, but I know that a good proportion of the V8 AMGs have tips that are actually (and correctly in my view) part of the exhaust.

I removed the exhaust tips from my S212 E350cdi when I bought the car as one was misaligned and the previous owner had smothered them with mud. Must admit to being pleasantly surprised at the quality as they are stainless steel and cleaned up very easily, the worst part was removing tar spots on the inner part presumably from DPF regeneration

Thanks guys, yeah they are part of exhaust as far as I can see so I'll have to do them on the car.

It can be quite therapeutic, just be careful that you don't get carried away and know when to stop: -

I may have gone a touch OTT on mine and am actually back on it today...

Dave, the underside of your car is normally cleaner than the outside of mine just after I’ve finished washing it anyway!

Too much time on my hand at the moment Craig, need another interest I suppose as there's no work left in me.

I had the Golf washed, dried and polished before 08:30 this morning, then started with the Mercedes. :(

Come down and do mine if you want Dave, it’s in need of a good decontamination and wax

No danger of that here Dave :) I did the tips recently, but felt no inclination to go any further whatsoever. Us AMG types have four exhaust pipes, so that was quite enough for me. It does look nice though. I used metal polish (Peek) and elbow grease, because that's what I had in the shed.

Like wise.....I cleaned my tips last week with the wire brush on the end of the drill, worked a treat underneath, had to use Autosol with a rag to get to the top and sides. I'll give these a good clean when I remove the rear bumper for future body beautifying :D
