Airmatic on your 164, if not then it’ll be a spring that’s snapped, likely up near the top near the pig tail where they seem to like to break.

There's a lot of it going around, so far this year my son (Vauxhall Astra), daughter (Citroën DS) and wife (Vauxhall Corsa) have all suffered broken springs.

I have had the same on both W164’s with no warning. 1st one just took out the ABS sensor but the 2nd broke the brake pip. That left me waiting over 6hrs for the AA.

Sorry if I'm being thick, but shouldn't the bottom of that spring sit in a cup, or some other mechanical restraint as part of the shock? Where has the bottom of the spring gone?

As it is, that spring appears to be resting on the brake line. I would not advise driving the vehicle with it like that. There is a foreseeable chance of damaging the brake lines and causing a fatal accident.

The bottom part of the spring that sits on the spring carrier has snapped off, allowing the spring to drop down over the strut, potentially very dangerous if it had happened whilst moving

Exactly the same thing happened to my CLS , spring snapped in the middle of the night when parked up o_O

Stupid idea that if the lower tighter coils snap off it allows the spring to ride over the cup and slide down the strut, cant believe that passed a "what if" technical department scenario.

For a company that prides itself on safety they certainly dropped the ball on that design.

Yes, the cup should be of sufficient diameter to prevent the spring dropping down in a failure.
Poor basic design.
Spring metal insufficiently specced?
Dip springs in a better coating to retard corrosion?

No doubt the ‘accountants‘ saved 2p and swayed the argument

Yep bottom on spring still in cup, not ideal design!
