Howdy guys!. I was poking around the underside of my 1990 560SEL the other day, and noticed to my suprise that the fuel pump is completley exposed to the elements. Is this normal? or was it supposed to have a cover on it?

worried!!!

I don't know about your car in particular, but its not unusual. My last car had a completely exposed fuel pump.

I'd check the contacts are nice and clean, and covered in petroleum jelly.

exposed pump

Both my W123 230E and my W126 300SE had a plastic cover which hung on the crossmember and protected the pump n filter from road dirt front sides n bottom the rear only being exposed maybe yours is missing.

I remember Turnipsock putting up a photo showing that there is not one on the other side. If you do not have one that is not good, you can alwys make one.
