external temperature gauge

I hope somebody out there can help.

I have a 1991 SL and the temperature gauge is very intermittent. Sometimes it's OK and other times it is off. Often it just counts from -40 to +40. I have had the sender changed and it's not that.

Is there some other mystical electronic device in an accecible location that might be at fault?
