Hi,
my 1990 300ce-24 hit a potentially terminally problem a few months ago. The EZL/ICU ignition control unit failed so no spark. Replaced the coil, crank sensor and dist points but no joy.
Price of a new one from merc was £2000.00 (yes that's the correct number of zeros!). A replacement from ebay is £500 with no guarantee it will work. I found a guy in greenwich who can rebuild them for £300 (inc vat).
I wasn't holding up much hope but to my big relief and six weeks of waiting the unit was back in place and the car had spark.
i've come across people who've scrapped their 300ce-24's because of this.
i have to say i'll be selling my baby with only 150k miles on the clock since the thought of this happening again does not fill me with confidence. My 1994 E320 cabrio does not have this madly priced unit.
it's the best car i've ever owned and i'll be sorry to see it go.
