I need 2 new tyres. The rears are fine for now but I need 2 new front ones. Running Khumo KU31's and very happy with them but they're not the bargains they once were.
I'll probably bite the bullet and buy 2 more but I noticed I can get Falken FK452's for what I used to pay for Khumos. Reviews seem as good too.
I have 2 concerns.
Firstly I'll be mixing brands - I'm not doing track days but all the same I don't normally do this.

secondly, I used to run Federals which were very good (they're a real bargain now) but moved away as whilst the grip and lifespan were good, the ride and noise were below par. After 50% wear I started to think the front wheel bearings needed attention. The Khumos were a revelation in comprison and I don't want to screw up again for the sake of a few quid.
So
anyone had the falkens and how do they perform for ride, noise and comfort?

My S350 had Khumos on the back and Falkens on the front when I bought it, all were fairly new and the tyres performed well over the summer months and were quiet.

As they reached the half worn stage of about 4mm tread depth, the car seemed to be very skittish in the wet and the road noise level increased dramatically.

I have recently replaced them all with Dunlops and the car is back to the way it should be, stable and silent.

The Dunlops in my size were only marginally more expensive (£147) at Mytyres than Khumos (£135) but Falkens (£112) were certainly a lot cheaper .

I know of several people who are very happy with their 452s - planning to get some myself at the next tyre change.

I used Falken FK452s on a Subaru Legacy 3.0R.

For the money they are a good tyre, but there was a fair amount of road noise and thy lasted about 15k miles.

I changed to Michelin Pilot Sports on that car and whilst they were more expensive they were a much better tyre.

I had two Falken FK452 245 40 18's put on our Audi A6. Very happy so far, they also have a nice tread patten.

Thanks guys, Pretty much what I thought then. The Falkens seem to be like the Federals. Overall excellent tyre, good grip, decent life etc and for the price put the Conti etc to shame, but, like the federals, they start to get noisy around 4mm.
Its a shame as the noise from the federals put me off them in the end. Probably ok-ish on some sportier cars but on an E class, where everything is designed from the outset to be peaceful and quiet, its just too intrusive and spoils it.
Khumos are the same, though pricier now, but they stay quiet which, on a 700 mile a week motorway car, matters.
- Oh well, khumos it is.

I tried a set of Falken 452's on the back when they didn't have the Kumho KU31 in stock. They seemed to perform very well although a slightly firmer ride. The only problem was that they only lasted 10K miles vs 20K for the KU31's (the original Contis acheived 15K).

I suppose driving faster keeps the water out of the blocked drains!

So your running on slicks then, if stopped you can always tell the old bill that you are training for next years GP - wherever it might be:shock:
