I've seen a number of posts regarding intermittent cabin fans being attributable to defective Fan regulators/ control units. The problem is easily fixable but the cost of the control unit is very high (typically between £120 - £170 from MB). However with a bit of research you should be able to purchase from the OEM which in this case is Behr-Hella. Go to the website at http://www.behrhellaservice.com/Channels/Home/Home.jsp. and enter the on-line catalogue. Alternatively the Behr Trade Number should appear on the label of the unit itself after the word Behr. In my case this was 96190
For a 1999 W202 I found that I could get the regulator for £43.20 + £7.50 direct delivery ordered from a local Behr-Hella stockist!!! Somewhat cheaper than MB charge.
Happy hunting!
