Fault codes thermostat

Hi, I have an issue where the van ( Vito 116) thinks it's overheating. Temp starts at 40 and rises quickly to 100, fans kick in etc as expected and it goes in to limp mode. The problem is there are no fault codes when it is plugged in. Wouldn't the thermostat throw a code if it was broke?

faulty temp sensor perhaps .... ???

Maybe, but thought that would get a code when plugged in.
maybe a short though in the circuit. I just don’t know
