Hi Ive Just Brought A C180 1995 N Reg My First Mercedes It Seems A Bit Lumpy On Tickover And You Have To Give It A Bit Of Throttle To Start It And Hold It At About 10,000 For A Wile Before It Will Tickover When It Does It Seems To Idle At About 10,000 And Fluctuate Between 10-12,000 Not Yet Knowing A Great Deal About Mercedes I Wondered If Anyone Could Tell Me If This Is Normal Or What The Probable Fault Could Be Oh Forgot To Mention Its An Auto Thanks

Welcome,
As anyweb says get it serviced, v easy to do most routine jobs yourself. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mine (P reg. 180 man bought at two years old with 24,000 miles, now up to 210,000 and still on original clutch). Most reliable and best value motor I ever had, it is rock solid..

I agree with Anyweb that a service is the starting point but I do reckon there is something amiss somewhere. Idle should be around 800 so at 1,000 (not 10,000 unless its an F1 C180!) and there is nothing on the service sheet that would cause that. Most service items cause low idle with weak plugs, leads etc.

If I had to guess, I'd say throttle on startup (shouldn't need it) and high idle point to an air leak on the induction side. I'd check the condition of all the pipes and gaskets as a starting point. (After a full service obviously). It could also be a temp sensor causing it to run rich. To be honest I'd probably service it then give it to a specialist for a diagnostic. These cars are complicated and faults can have odd effects as the computer attempts to compensate, so the symptoms may not be the problem.

Check your throttle is at the idle stop as C Classes of this age can suffer from siezing/siezed linkages.
