ok off topic a bit so i put it in this section , thankfully its not an issue with my merc but my partners fiesta (1996 1.25 zetec) gearbox failed so i got a second hand one put in by a garage as i didnt have time to do , when they first fitted it , it worked fine but it started leaking transmission oil from the reverse switch. so it went back and they replaced that from the old gearbox , now when we got the car back it jumps out of second gear , its difficult to get 2nd & 4th gear , and the linkage feels loose. any suggestions?

well i just adjusted the linkage as per haynes manual , then i checked the transmission oil , it was over filled , ive drained it down the right level , now when driving it all the gears are fine 99% of the time , occasionally from a standing start it wont select 2nd gear , if you double declutch then it will pick up 2nd gear , would this be related to overfilling the transmission oil?. or is the syncro a bit dodgy?

p.s it can be difficult to get 2nd even when the car isnt running , which i thought wouldnt be syncro related?. i can get 1st gear no problems which is on the same syncro afaik?

Legoman, i will resist the temptation to say scrap it ...............
Overfilling the box wont have caused your problem. You said the gearbox was leaking I think, so the level would be more likely to be low that tallies with selector rail problems, which I think is your problem. If you still have the original box make one good un' out of both!
First & second syncro hubs are part of one component but at different end's
A Fiesta box shouldnt be that difficult to strip.

aye i agree , were getting rid of it after xmas , she wants a vw polo which im happy about as there much better cars. for the time being though its drivable , i still suspect the overfill was part of the issue , i believe when they replaced the reverse switch they overfilled it , this ive heard can cause the clutch to get contaminated , which might cause issues with gear selection , who knows , the problem with second gear is so infrequent that ill be suprised if the syncro has gone , ah well nvm , if it stays working until the new year i can use it as a trade in for a much newer vw polo.

update on this , just found out the garage has put two different gearbox oils in there! , the second time they worked on it they put a completely different grade in there mixing it with what was already there , might be part of the problem i hope.
