Indeed. My car has them, yet the MB dealer still managed to scuff my alloy! Likely it would have been worse without it though. Not had a response from them regarding that mind...not that I can prove it, though I do have photo's from a few days prior showing a pristine wheel. Grrr.

Scoob.

I would say complain, having seen some of the responses from MB customer services on here it may not be favourable but it will cost you the price of a stamp (or email)

Here's a question. does anyone know where I can get some caps for the screws on my rear number plate? I bought some from Halfords but they are sized to fit the screws it came with which are too small!

The screws showing their aluminium shininess against my yellow plate are really irking me! Pedantic I know!

Congrats and welcome. It's nice feeling indeed, one which I'm still getting used to a few months on. Enjoy :D

You have a very nice car spoilt by screws in the number plates..Why not spend £15 on a nice pair of new ones and use the sticky strips to hold them on.

Easy to clean and looks far better:D

Talking screws...

The number plate screws on my friends BRAND NEW E350 CDI Coupe started to RUST after a couple of months, the rusty stain dripping down the number plate. Apparently this is "normal" and "there's nothing they can do about it". Personally, I'd say not fitting cheap cr4p screws is something they could do about it! I've never had the screws rust before on a car, though they do tend to have the nice neat caps on.

How can they do this on a Mercedes of all things. Crazy.

I insisted the dealer fitted security screws to the front plate of my C207 before I took delivery of it.

Hopefully these will not rust.

Shouldn't do hopefully. I've no idea what material the screws on my other cars are - though they're not rusty. The caps look nice, but I doubt they fully protect against the elements.

Easy. So they match the rest of the bodywork.

Were older Mercs really that bad? I did see a 2003 (I think it was) with LOTS of bubbles on the wings at the garage the other day. It was a cabrio, but not sure which one. Could easily have been from a poor accident repair though. Hope mine doesn't rust, as I plan to keep it a while.

My Impreza (1999) only has one bit of rust, and that's on the offside rear wheel arch where they're know to go apparently - that's despite it having all the scheduled rust treatment (smelly!) in it's first 5 years...

Your car should be just fine on the rust front

New plates or screws? Happy to get new plates if I can find the right size screws (that are covered properly!!) to put them on!

To be fair the strips may be a good idea, I think the last owner used those as there are remnants of sticky strip under the plate.

I use double the amount of sticky strips, if the bumper is slightly curved, then I heat to plate up and bend it so the the sticky strips are not under pressure.

So easy to clean with no screws and looks better.

thanks malcolm. i'll probably get some new plates made up and the sticky strips as suggested, looks a lot cleaner and the plate won't rattle every time I close the boot...

would use the originals but they have holes drilled in...defies the point somewhat! :D

Just so you all know, I'll be using this thread for technical Q's from now on as I have a new "Adventures in the E350" blog in the Member's Car Discussion forum here - http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=119493

With that in mind I have two questions -

1. How do I find out what version of COMAND I have and what the latest version is? Mine doesn't appear to have the functionality to show text messages sent to my phone on screen, only to make calls and import contacts, so if I update it will I get this functionality?

2. Was the software update to the gearbox free of charge bar labour? If not how much am I looking at?
