firstly, is 'every' new engine bench tested?

is running in actually needed these days.

if so...

When the vehicle leaves the factory it has a sump full - right up until the first oil change.

Would it not be a good idea to swap out that oil and filter  after the first 1-2K miles once ran in?

1st Question, no they are not all tested, the car is run to make sure it works but that is about it.

2nd Q, yes running in is very important to bed in the engine components. This can take quite awhile and certain manufacturers used oils specificially for the running in period. The oils actually allow components to 'wear' so they better match.
Vauxhall, VW & Saab put in long life synthetic from the start which does not help with running in, these cars can also suffer from high oil consumption. 1ltr per 1,000 miles is not uncommon and 'within specification sir'
Follow the manufacturers guidlines but you need to bear in mind that a lot of these are written for fleet mgrs who only care about a car for 2-4 yrs and not it's long term reliability.
My R1100SS' engine will not be run in until >15,000 miles, until then it should be run on mineral oil otherwise oil consumption can be very high.
There are arguments that hire cars are some of the best run in vehicles as they have been driven in many different styles.

The manufacturer reccomends mineral oil, but the dealer wants to use magnatec 5/40 fully synth.

is this to save the environment or to pocket high profits ;)

I know the fully synth debate and why its a good oil, etsers etc... I use fully synth in the E200 and the service records show a 6K oil change.

I dont know what oil is in the sump from new, but I know I dont want it sloshing around for the recomended 12500miles before the first oil change - unless it is a particular running in oil - I think it will just be a mineral oil that meets the reccomended requirements. makes no sense to me if it is just plain oil - vehicle made in thailand - shipped over, sat for a while, then delivery miles only.... or - should I leave it in?

it's the L200 btw.

the dealer must get that oil cheap. supply your own if you want too. as long as it meets the recommendations in the book.

you could also contact mitsubishi cars or colt cars or whatever it is called by email and ask them to offer you some definitive advice. following the manufacturers recomendations will, for the time of the warranty period, be the best course of action.

i think some people mis interpret the running in period as "drive really gently". it says you are not meant to let it labour in low gears, no full throttle, use all the gears and try not to sit at the same revs for long periods. so no motorway cruising, but up and down the revs a bit.

Mineral oil, will allow it to bed in better. se that during the running in period and the switch to either a semi or full synth
