Merceded C220 CDI 1999
Hi, I am new to this forum. I am the current owner of a W202 C220 CDI. I purchased the car new in 1998-1999 on a T reg plate. Over the years I have been stopped by 2 motorists and was informed the car was one of the first CDI's in the Uk and perhaps in Europe. Can someone on the forum please advise how can I get this confirmed. I have contacted MB in the UK and not made much progress. It will be nice to know I have a piece of motoring history and look after it for the future. Any advise will be appreciated.

I'd say that is very early for CDi engines so they may be on to something, T 1999...

They're a disbelieving lot here - so high res photos are obviously needed as evidence!

Would love to be able to say I've kept the same car for twenty years.

According to Wikipedia the 220CDi came out in 1997 for the 1998 model year.

I thought that the OM605/6 engines were killed off in 1999, due to Euro2 coming in.
The 210 face lift was hence only for the CDI 'new breed'.

It was certainly the first model CDI, but I'm sure it would be pretty easy to check with a chassis number if your particular car was one of the first,, if that's what you are implying?

"1997: Mercedes-Benz common rail technology celebrated its premiere in the four-cylinder engine of the Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI. The OM 611 DE 22 LA engine was equipped with innovative direct fuel injection supplied by a fuel line serving as a common pressure reservoir, an exhaust gas turbocharger with intercooler and an exhaust gas aftertreatment system with oxidation catalyst. In the C 220 CDI, the 2.2-liter engine became the forerunner of common rail direct injection (CDI). CDI engines by Mercedes-Benz attracted critical acclaim for their exceptionally smooth running, high torque and high output with low fuel consumption and low emissions."

The OM611 was fitted first to the C class in 1997 and then to the E in 1998 as I understand it..

What sort of photos do you need. Just the external body work with the CDI badge on it.

The car is as close to original. I even have the same seats - re-cushioned in 2017, original exhausts, engine and gear box untouched. One battery change in its life. The injectors have been re-conditioned once by a specialist and are the original injectors. The car drives like a dream, costs me minimal in maintenance and is used daily.

Engine number would probably because better guide as to how early in the run it was. Also the 220 had a modification after the first year and capacity was slightly reduced from 2153 to 2148cc by a reduction in stroke. EPC will have the engine number this occurred so as to see if it was first batch or not.

Engine number is 61196030103476

Engine capacity from the log book 2151

Out of interest have you tried asking MB themselves?

He mentions contacting MB UK earlier with no success - not sure if it was HQ or....?

Ah missed that.
It's definitely a first year 220CDi engine (confirmed by engine number) which also confirms the capacity at 2151cc.
Just trying to find where in the production run it fits. At least at that point the 220CDi was solely in use in the 202.

Ok... Getting somewhere.
Car was delivered 23/04/1999.
The engine number suggests it was the 3476th OM611 off the production line.
It's reasonable to assume it was one of the first 220CDis in the country but I'd be surprised if it was the first given there were over 3000 engines produced before yours and that the car was delivered a year after the 220CDi W202 was released.

Historical interest then.
Worth keeping in good shape.
Nice motor anyway.
