10" is very wide for such a small vehicle and small engine.

Hi.. Not sure what engine has to do with it, although it seem the mercedes purists.. Love a bit of key board warrior..
Where in the process of building a full evo 2 replica and the new engine will be around 500 bhp... .. It seems the days of resonable answers to a question are fading..

sounds interesting, didn't know you were undertaking such a project (might have missed it elsewhere and if so apologies!)- you will likely get the purists on one side saying leave original, others who go a bit OTT the other way, for me I'm fascinated to see how this progresses....enjoy ;)

IIRC the Cosworth had a Ceginus wheel on (Looks like a Borbet C, flat faced 6 spoke wheel), I checked with my mate, he checked they are a 8.25x17" ET34 fitted with 245/40 R17" tyres all round.

If you are building a full Replica car then with the arch extensions on they will fit but on the standard car the arches are too small (narrow) to accommodate that size wheel.

On the "reasonable answer" point, if you want the answer then the devil is in the detail:

As the car stands the biggest is a 7.5x18 ET35 wheel all round fitted with 225/35 R18 tyres (you could possibly fit an 8" wide wheel on if you do some arch work and roll the arch lips but this is trial and error)

If you are putting a wide arch kit on it then the world is your oyster and there will be many options but I have given you the standard wheels size on that car above

Engine size is relevant due to a number of reasons.
Bigger wheels increase rotational inertia blunting performance.
Wider tyres increase rolling resistance, particularly on bends - the tighter the bends the more the tyre has to scrub and the more power is required.
Increased loadings as a result of the above stress transmission components. The differential on the base 2.0 is not know for strength or longevity unlike the stronger items fitted to larger and more powerful vehicles.

Fundamentally you're introducing a lot more stress into the vehicle.

Now at no point did you suggest you were going to put in a 500hp engine (and I'm genuinely curious where that's coming from as the 2.0 won't take that amount of power without serious coin and the V8s are notoriously difficult to fit). You might do it with a tweaked up om606 but that won't be much fun to fit either as the cross member gets in the way (and doesn't unbolt).

The only other way I can think of is Chevy LS with turbo but that's a shed load of cutting and hacking too.

It's a shame you're using such a mint example to hack up to do this.

But given you're clearly an expert I'll leave you to it. Your money your choice.
