Both guards off now. Feeling completely out of my depth, can’t see what I want. Difficult to see where I can go from here. Any advice would be gratefully received.

I think you have a M271 Engine, (not sure - I'm presuming it's petrol) The Starter Motor in that case will be on the left side, (facing front) and attached to the Block next to the Bell housing. It should be a thick RED Cable. It should have a black plastic cap over the nut where it goes onto the solenoid. Test with a multimeter but that is a Permanent Live.

I see air con pipework ang what looks to be the alternator.
I'm not familiar with your engine, are you on the correct side?

Google pictures of the 722.6 gearbox, even on eBay, as different views might look familiar from below.
The gearbox is aft of the bell housing.
The starter will bolt into the bell housing from the front, so the terminals are fore of the bell housing and facing forward.

I would expect it to be to the inside of your front wheel suspension strut.

Thanks for all of the prompt feedback, and links/suggestions.

'Phone out of juice, so squeezing some more onto it now, so that I can see what I'm looking at. Time for a coffee, and looking at pictures of gearboxes!

Ok, I think we’ve found it. As an ex girlfriend used to say, it’s all about getting the angle right.

It was a little hidden away.

So, if this is it, any thoughts of where I connect the positive?

It should be under the black plastic cap. REMEMBER IT IS LIVE! Check it with a multimeter and see if you get voltage, normally 12.8v but in your case more likely 10v-11v. Then connect a 12v source positive to Live and Negative to an Earth on the car. You should be able to unlock the car now.

To me it looks like the closer cable that wraps around the starter is the feed from the solenoid.
That would make the cable that goes behind to a hidden connection the feed from the battery, although in your case the 'back' feed to the battery.
As said there may well be a plastic cap on it.

If you power up the visible terminal the starter will spin, if there's enough capability in whatever your donor is., that's not a problem,
but it would be the other that is needed to back feed to the battery.

Ok... by under the black plastic cap do you mean this one? (See pic)

I have no multimeter, and no idea how to use one. I can read up on them and go and get one if essential? Apologies for appearing very naïve, but this isn’t my line at all.

‘Visible terminal’ being the one that I arrowed in the pic on my previous post?

Struggling a bit here, particularly with the last line. What is the ‘other’?

TBH honest I would like to see a photo of where the cable goes to that is clamped by the terminal we can see.
But my thinking from what I think I see is that the terminal you want to connect the +ve 12v to is the terminal at the end of the heavier cable that I think is coming down from higher up (not sure of the orientation of your photo).

From the battery / fuse box there is a feed to the starter solenoid.
This will come down from higher in the engine bay and is the +12 volt feed you need.

Ok, thankyou, and apologies if I’m coming across as dim.

On the attached pic, there is a yellow arrow, pointing toward the front of the car.

The photo that you want to see of where the cable goes to, is that the cable on which I’ve put the green arrow, and is the arrow in the direction that you want to see?

Here is a video. fast forward to 2'19. This is what you are looking for. The Live has a cap on it. Remove the cap. That is a permanent Live to the Solenoid.

Wow, that's what mine looks like underneath.
I've got the 2005 S203 C220.

The answer would appear to be that it wraps around the back of the starter, then to where I don’t know.

Yes the grren arrow cable is, I think, wrapping around the starter and will enter the starter as its feed (from the solenoid). The solenoid is a switch that carries the 12v +ve from the batter into the starter.
If that green arrowed cable goes into the starter you can ignore it.

On the opposite side of the starter is a similar / same sized cable that, I believe, is coming down from the battery. If I am right then connect your donor +12 volts to the terminal that that goes to.
