Hi All

My indie has warned me that my flexible brake hoses are showing cracks in the rubber and they will need to be replaced within a year or two. My C class passed its MOT about a couple of months ago, without advisories, so I have received adequate warning that attention is needed.

What kind of life can one expect from a set of hoses? My car is now 9 year old so a 10 year life for a set of hoses doesn't seem that bad.

I imagine hose replacement is a simple enough task but I do wonder about the cost of MB hoses? My indie said he has a brake bleeding machine.

Most brake hose manufacturers suggest a 10 year service life after which the hoses should be replaced regardless of vehicle duty or usage.

I would recommend that the master cylinder (similarly lifed by its maker at at 10yr) be considered tired and that you consider changing that as well.

Hi wireman

I will bear this in mind even though my C class still stops impeccably. Thanks.

Brake pipes and light surface rust

Hi All

My indie also commented on a slight surface rust on some of the brake pipes and rear chassis. He said, nothing to worry about. When the weather get warmer he said he will remove the rust and give the entire underside the WaxOyl treatment which will add years to the life of the vehicle.

He hastened to add that the bodywork rust issue (re: thin paint) and the very light surface rust on the underside are unrelated. The later is quite normal for a vehicle approaching its first decade.
