Hold it in on the close position and then try to close the mirrors and press the button untill you hear a click. your mirror might have been knocked out by someone and by doing this, you should see it open and close as normal

As above, also they get to stiff and need lubricating,, spray some silicon ot PTFE into the moving swivel part, have someone hold the switch while you help the mirror to move

They do stick when not used (and often when used daily) so as Malcolm says work it manually until it free's off. I got my 210's mirros working again using this method (too 1/2 an hour mind) but even on my 211, where the mirrors fold automatically so run back and forth at least 4 times a day stick from time to time. I found myself on the motorway last week, glanced across to the inside mirror before changing lanes and just saw myself looking back!!

I suspect that Helen has a suite of provisions - interior rear view mirror, 2 adjustable exterior mirrors and of course an illuminated mirror in the sun visor, so it might be mirror, mirror, mirror, mirror on the wall!

Back to the subject in hand, the n/s mirror is trying to work as I have now bought a tin of PTFE spray from Halfrauds (the only place I could find that sold it) but it seems that there might be some sort of gearing mechanisham and it is jumping this?? I sprayed a load of the PTFE and there was a load of browny muck that leaked out from underneath and down the paint work. With the cover off the back and looking straight down there is 3 very small star screw heads? I was wondering if you can adjust these so as to stop the jumping that I am feeling/ hearing?? any ideas anyone?????

There is no adjust for this, it may take a few operations of the mirror to get it working. The trick is to get the PTFE into the moving swivel joint.
It will not harm the paint or anything on the car
